Nope, remember it as clear as crystal. Probably because I'm nowhere near the coast, so I normally, with most storms get 55-60mph gusts. October 2000 is still the worst I've experienced to this date, don't get me wrong. So if burns day was as bad as 2000, as well as 1987, then good grief is all I can say haha.

You just contradicted yourself because originally you said last night was worse then 2000 lol. Usually I only experience 50 - 60mph gusts also as I'm nowhere near the sea which is roughly what we had last night maybe locally 70 but in Oct 2000 we had 90 mph gusts even here, I'm guessing that Burns Day was similar with 1987 being slightly worse!

No the 122mph at Folkestone in Norfolk was official and there's no way even if the equipment was abit faulty that it could have been that far wrong, it's on the Great Storm Wikipedia article if you want to take a look, there's no mention of the gust being disqualified on there!

Just a point here Folkestone is in Kent, not Norfolk.

Sky news saying another big sink hole in hemel hemstead, homes evacuated, why so many?

Latest News INSERT HEADLINE HERE

15/02/2014

Police are currently in attendance in Oatridge Gardens, Hemel Hempstead after receiving a report of a sink hole appearing in the road at 7.30am today (Saturday, February 15).

The hole, which is in a residential cul de sac, has mainly affected the road. However, seventeen properties have been evacuated for the safety of residents in the area.

The hole is approximately 35ft wide and 20ft deep.

Police are working with partner agencies, including Dacorum Borough Council, specialist structural engineers and utilities companies to assess the situation.  The road, and surrounding roads, have been closed for the safety of residents and whilst agencies work at the scene.

Never said that mate, I said it was on par with 2000. It couldn't have been that far off, as we have seen structural damage and powercuts from this storm nationwide.

Maybe I misquoted then but I can't remember the name of the place then but it's on Wikipedia and it was definitely somewhere in Norfolk.

I personally found 2000 to be alot worse and there's been no mention of 80-90mph inland gusts only on coasts inland more like in the 60's mph

I believe the gust recorded in Norfolk was at Gorlestone in 1987 however it was disputed after the event and downgraded to 98mph.

Gorleston was the name of the place that recorded 122mph in 1987

Maximum gust of 60MPH in the Bexley area, been out for a walk, area seems to have avoided any noteable damage, just some branches down, and a few precarious looking TV aerials

I brief look through the SW thread doesn't make for happy reading Bournemouth, Poole and Ringwood way, lots of trees down and of course the evacuation of the restaurant at Milford Haven. Hope your place has survived OK.

Just watching the coverage of Milford on Sky News, the reporter can't hear what the anchor is asking him, sounds like the people in the restaurant were lucky not be injured. Indeed, ever since we bought the flat in November for our 'winter retreat' (good rates for all those wanting a break by the sea!), there has been storm after storm and every time we go down it is with bated breath and lots of crossed fingers.Continues to be very gusty indeed here and some squally rain passing through. Gusts picking up again here. We did have some storm damage - the lattice woodwork holding up a rose has fallen over. Not walked doggy yet so may see storm damage then.

On a whole, I'll agree October 2000 was worse. But with the squall lines around last night, I wouldn't have ruled out a local 80-85mph gust. Looks pretty evident to me, as 60-70mph gusts are not normally capable of causing structural damage to brickwork etc.

With the latest outlook, this may not be the last real storm of this winter just yet!

Talking of severe storms of the past, this is the one I remember very well. Christmas Eve 1997. Blew our conservatory roof off.....

On topic.....very windy still here with some powerful gusts.

Bloominheck K! I think I remember that one too.

One that also stood out well was Boxing day 1998, remember hearing the fierce wind howling down my uncle's chimney when we was round for a buffet and footy day! Also seeing bits of debris blowing about too. I think the North got hit hardest with that storm though.

I think that's where I was getting mixed up with perhaps lol but in actual fact it was Gorleston and given the fact the amount of devastation caused by that storm compared to anything since I don't think that wind measurement was exaggerated, I personally have found Wikipedia to be very accurate with its information despite some of the bad press it receives from time to time and it says on there that the highest winds in Essex and Kent gusted upto 120mph and that was talking in general terms and considering that no storms since not even October 2000 with supposedly 90mph gusts left caravan sites and whole areas of woodland and forest flattened like they'd been nuked like was the case in 87 then who are we to argue with the sums?

Just checked the Wunderground site for our nearest weather station. I am no expert in using this site, but it appears to show our maximum gust speed overnight of 85km/h and wind speed 67km/h; even this morning, our maximum gust speed was still 76 km/h.

Just opened the back door to see how things are and it remains very windy (I can hear it too, not often I get that as the walls and Double Glazing normally block all that noise out)

My Dads garden took a battering here in Fav!

Ripped down the wall so now they have open plan garden with nextdoor and took out the gazebo frame on the way! My Dad is ok about it, I was more upset than him lol. My Dad said the town has a bit of damage, street lights smashed, fences all down, a few trees down etc
