Worst storm I've experienced here was in October 2000 when we had gusts upwards of 75mph peaking at nearly 90mph.

October 1987 was the classic I remember, St. Mary's Lane was cleared of bits of trees and other assorted impedementa on the Friday morning by Havering Council, but they stopped at the border where it became Brentwood.towards West Horndon.  The cars were driving East, then having to try and reverse back where the demarcation changed.  Utter and complete chaos ensued.

Yes, I'm obviously talking about today.

Probably the worst I've experienced here was October 1987, then January 1976, then January 1990. :)

As others have said, we could be hit hard on Friday. I guess whether the low is a filling feature, or deepening / at peak strength when it arrives, maybe crucial, as well as, of course, its track.

Quick update from the top of Reigate Hill....

Still raining but almost stopped,  looking to the south west there are brighter skies, with patches of blue, heading in.  The wind has just picked up a bit - I can't hear the motorway noise at all now. My sense, though, is that the worst of it is done for this part of Surrey.

No-one else from Netweather is here are they?  There are a couple of strange looking folk sitting in their cars typing on their laptops!

And with that, back to the studio

Thankyou AS

Now today we are launching an urgent adoption campaign due to the significant number of cats and dogs that have rained down in the area, if you want to adopt or are willing to foster these poor animals, please call the number at the bottom of the screen or visit our website for more details.

I've just been emailed a wind warning by the Met Office. I'll post it, as I find it somewhat bizarre...

Dates

Issued at:
1531 on Wed 12 Feb 2014

Valid from:
1535 on Wed 12 Feb 2014

Valid to:
0500 on Thu 13 Feb 2014

Warning

A vigorous area of low pressure will move northeastwards across Ireland and southern Scotland during Wednesday afternoon and evening, clearing eastwards early on Thursday. This will be accompanied by a swathe of southwesterly gales across many areas which will be severe in places. Winds will ease from the south overnight.

A first peak in the winds will clear from southeast England late afternoon, but with the main swathe of even stronger and potentially damaging winds now across Wales, then affecting Northern Ireland and northern England later in the day (see Amber and Red warnings).

The public should be prepared for the the risk of disruption to transport and possibly also power supplies. In addition, large waves are likely to affect some coasts.

This warning has been updated to include all of Northern Ireland and southern Scotland.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

A vigorous depression will track across the north of Ireland during Wednesday afternoon and hence over southern Scotland by late evening. Squally winds will soon clear southeast England, then a swathe of very strong winds will affect west Wales during the afternoon and parts of north Wales, Northern Ireland and northern England during the evening (see Amber and Red Warnings), with winds also gusting to 70 mph across parts of southwest England and the Midlands at first. Winds will ease from the south overnight.

I can't really see how it relates to my area, particularly with the time range mentioned?Posted Image

Hi I see your an Upminster man lol, me too :-) I work for the Havering council now on the barrow but I'm off today as I had to use up some annual leave left over from last year I'm glad I did now cause wouldn't have fancied working in that rain & wind earlier, the amount of times my barrow has almost been blown over into the road already since I started my job. I can't begin to imagine how scary 1987 was

You've done a better job than the reporters....

"How does it feel to be evacuated from your home, made effectively homeless and have all your possessions destroyed with no prospect of moving back into your house until August... etc.?"

A £50 note for the first member of the public to say live on TV, "Just marvellous - couldn't be better..."

Just heard a reporter ask, "How does it feel to be flooded right now?"

Sky brightening now (like a yellow colour) and sun peering out a bit. Clouds very fast moving but I dont know if we missed that squall line. Still very windy but the rain has stopped.

That was mad! :O

Sky gone very dark here after about an hour of sunshine and a few drops of rain starting to fall on my window I hope this isn't a squall developing!

Wind seems to be picking up here again, very blowy/gusty ATM, at least it has stopped raining which is a blessing, but now taken the rubbish out I do not think I have any need to go outside again till the morning so any further weather updates from me will be window obs.

Still laughing at sky, reporter is wading in water, discovers water is covering obstacle, nearly falls flat on her face in water live on tv.
