Candelmas - 2 Feb

I usually post this topic every year - as it is my favourite weather saying of the year..

 

Candelmas day is this Sunday 2nd February and the saying goes -

 

If candelmas day be fair and bright

Winter will take another bite

If candelmas day be grey with rain

Winter has gone and won't come again

 

Whilst weather lore is weather lore and rarely holds truth. I do think this one is quite a good one. Roughly speaking 2 Feb is mid winter in the farming winter calendar. The saying goes that farmers usually have half there winter feed still in stock on 2 Feb.

 

Last year from memory I think the 2nd was a dry one and yes we had a good 6 weeks of winter weather thereafter (2 months in fact).

Maybe there are like buses and will all turn up at once, although around here they are probably like winter turn up late and half empty
