Candelmas - 2 Feb

Recommended Posts

I usually post this topic every year - as it is my favourite weather saying of the year..

Candelmas day is this Sunday 2nd February and the saying goes -

If candelmas day be fair and bright

Winter will take another bite

If candelmas day be grey with rain

Winter has gone and won't come again

Whilst weather lore is weather lore and rarely holds truth. I do think this one is quite a good one. Roughly speaking 2 Feb is mid winter in the farming winter calendar. The saying goes that farmers usually have half there winter feed still in stock on 2 Feb.

Last year from memory I think the 2nd was a dry one and yes we had a good 6 weeks of winter weather thereafter (2 months in fact).

Mmm this year it looks a damp squib..

Hi

I've just put together a blog about Candlemas, which it is today, and the old weather lore that says:

"If Candlemas be fair and clear there’ll be two winters in one year"

I never realised the connection between Candlemas and Groundhog day, but you can read about in the blog, which also contains the usual graph that attempts to prove if there is any connection.

It's fair and very clear today, but we haven't had one winter yet....

Sunshine in western and central areas to end the weekend, but still cloudier and windier further east. Monday brings a reversal in fortunes though with eastern parts seeing the best of any sunny weather. Read the full update here

    Geese and autumn weather

Where are the geese going? The UK weather has a very autumnal feel now and the honking of passing geese overhead, arriving from afar adds to the feeling that summer has gone. Read more here
