Status red wind warning for Cork and Kerry

Met Éireann has issued a status red wind warning, the highest level, for counties Cork and Kerry.

The warning came into effect at 6am and is valid until 3pm.

Stormy conditions and high seas are expected, with damaging winds gusting up to a 160km/h, especially in exposed coastal areas.

A status orange weather warning has been issued for counties Wexford, Galway, Mayo, Clare, Limerick and Waterford.

Stormy weather and winds gusting up to 130km/h are expected in the region for a time later today.

A status yellow wind warning is in place for counties Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Dublin, Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Wicklow, Offaly, Westmeath, Meath, Leitrim, Roscommon, Sligo and Tipperary.

Extremely windy weather is expected in those counties, with winds gusting up to 110km/h.

Gerald Fleming of Met Éireann told RTÉ's Morning Ireland that the storm was building in the south.

It is also expected to be very cold today, particularly in Ulster, with snow falling in some places.

Kerry County Council Communications Officer Padraig Corkery said the council is "as ready as they can be".

Mr Corkery said the council had been dealing with coastal flooding since St Stephen's Day and was now preparing for flooding from extra rainfall.

He said some drains may still be blocked since the last storm.

Mr Corkery said there was a "huge amount of sandbags" around the county and members of the public could collect "empty sandbags" from its offices around the county.

Trip to Anglesey update 2

Just got onto A55, driving torrential rain. Wind notably stronger but nothing significant yet. Rain this heavy though for an extended time will cause flooding. Already considering back up plans if we get stuck on Anglesey.

No warning sings on main roads about weather conditions as yet.

Driving conditions already terrible in the spray. 20 miles to Rhyl.

Starting to get quite bad in the south, some severe gusts and squally hail and rain showers.

Saying that, the sun has just come out! Worst of the winds expected around 2-3pm, just in time for the school runs...

Stay safe.  All the Matrix signs coming out of Leeds this morning were showing "Strong winds forecast today".  I expect a fair few road closures in this area (west/south Yorkshire) as ever today.

Not much I can do about it, I'm the car as a passenger, but now up on the side of the sea for the first time and it's clear the car is getting buffeted about now. By Llanddulas now and the sea actually looks really calm from the A55. The rain though, so heavy. Still no warning signs which is weird but there are not Many on A55 by the looks of it

Not a breath of wind here right now, but the sky looks like a crumpled grey quilt, agitated and swirling, being lowered over us by a hand from above.

Its very quiet on considering the incoming storm.

The Amber warning doesn't start till 10am winds are likely to increase during the morning and afternoon before slowly easing during the evening / early hours depending on where you are

Winds picking up and becoming noticeable outside the house. @SparkleS violent winds for N England are during the evening time, after 6pm to around midnight. Winds were ramped up slightly on the 6z run on the forward edge (NE flank) of the depression, severe southerly gales blasting through the Irish sea and along many other coastal counties in the south and west.

The main focus is parts of Ireland, Wales and N England, gusts 70-80mph perhaps 90-100mph for some exposed locations expecially NW Wales. If you live in these areas be prepared for some widespread disruption like trees down, power outages, and structural damage.

RAPID CYCLOGENESIS DEVELOPING A VERY DEEP 958MB LOW AS IT REACHES THE IRISH SEA, GENERATING SEVERE GALES WITH HEAVY RAIN

DISCUSSION:

THIS WARNING IS INTENDED TO COMPLEMENT WATCH #012, PLEASE REFER TO THAT FOR GENERAL SYNOPSIS. THERE IS EXCELLENT MODEL AND PARTNER AGENCY CONFIDENCE IN THE LIKELIHOOD OF SEVERE WEATHER THROUGH THE SPECIFIED PERIOD. AS THE DEEP LOW TRANSITS IRELAND, THE INITIAL FRONTAL SYSTEM WILL BRING SOUTHERLY WINDS OF ABOVE 40MPH AND GUSTS ABOVE 70MPH TO WALES AND THE SOUTHERN HALF OF ENGLAND THROUGH TO 2100UTC. BEHIND THIS, CLOSER TO THE LOW CENTRE AROUND THE SOUTHERN FLANK, WESTERLY WINDS OF ABOVE 50MPH WITH GUSTS TO 80MPH ARE POSSIBLE FROM LUNCHTIME THROUGH TO MIDNIGHT FOR WALES, IRISH SEA COASTS AND NORTHERN ENGLAND. INTENSE RAINFALL FROM THE INTIAL FRONTAL SYSTEM WILL BE UP TO 20MM WIDELY THROUGH THE AREAS SPECIFIED, WITH PERHAPS ABOVE 50MM FOR THE HIGH GROUND OF WALES AND SOUTHWEST ENGLAND, LEADING TO A RISK OF FLASH FLOODING AND EXACERBATING CURRENT FLOODING ISSUES. A SHOWERY POST-FRONTAL REGIME MAY ADD TO TOTALS HERE AND ELSEWHERE. IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE STRONGEST WINDS INTO THE SOUTHWESTERN QUARTER, PARTICULARLY MID TO SOUTH WALES, THERE MAY BE LARGE WAVES OF UP TO 20FT ATOP A STORM SURGE ADDING POSSIBLY ABOVE 1M TO HIGH TIDE LEVELS LATE AFTERNOON, RESULTING IN THE POSSIBILITY OF COASTAL FLOODING. DIRECT OBSERVATIONS OF DAMAGING WINDS AND COASTAL CONDITIONS ARE NOT ADVISED. PLEASE REFER TO WEATHER AND TRAVEL INFO AS NECESSARY. THIS WARNING MAY BE UPGRADED.

*UPDATE* THERE IS GOOD CONFIDENCE THAT THE PORTION OF THE COLD FRONT CROSSING THE SOUTH OF ENGLAND DURING LATE MORNING AND AFTERNOON WILL DEVELOP LINEAR CHARACTERISTICS, AND AS SUCH GUSTS MAY BE FOCUSSED AND ENHANCED AS IT PASSES. CONVECTIVE DOWNDRAFTING MAY SEE GUSTS ABOVE 70MPH, PERHAPS REACHING 80MPH, FOR AREAS WITHIN 50 MILES OF THE COAST.

SPOTTER ACTIVATION IS REQUESTED AND SPOTTERS ARE REQUESTED TO REPORT ALL FACTORS EXCEEDING ACTIVATION CRITERIA

strange question there chance storm upgraded to a cyclone.  If so has there ever been storm so powerful hit UK

No it wouldn't be given hurricane or cyclone status because of where we are positioned and they systems are generally generated over tropical waters however it dosent mean that the terms hurricane force can't be used

Update 3 - just in Conway town centre. Sheltered away the sea looks pretty calm. Heading into meeting for a couple of hours and expect it to be a lot worse when we get out and start to head to Anglesey .
