Heavy here and starting to lie on the hills, world turning whiter.

Snow fairly pelting down in EK in big fluffy flakes but it's just a shade too mild and too wet to lie - a pity as it would be accumulating nicely at this rate!  Pretty raw and horrible out there in wind-driven wet snow - a day to stay indoors.

Had been raining for almost an hour in the centre of Edinburgh but in the last 10 minutes it has turned to wet snow

Huge flakes trying hard to settle on the grass/cars now. If only it had snowed like this last night LOL

Amazing to read really.

Snow overview for Scotland
Monday 10 February 2014

The snow just won’t stop falling in Scotland and most of the resorts now claim to have more snow than their recent record season of 2009-10.

The snow at Glencoe (180/370cm) is fast approaching four metres deep now and many of the lifts are having to be dug out after each snowfall. Consistently cold weather has prevented the snow from melting much and it keeps piling up. Conditions are superb on and off piste so now is the perfect time to head to Scotland.

It’s very similar at Cairngorm (120/250cm). While the base depth isn’t as great as Glencoe, the snow coverage is fantastic and powder can be enjoyed from top to bottom. Four of their 12 lifts were running on Monday 10th February, with heavy snow showers and squally winds preventing the running of some of the more exposed lifts.

We live just a few meters from the Pentland Hills webcam at Eastside Holiday Cottages and I can confirm that the snow is coming down heavily!  Some of the biggest flakes I've seen for quite some time with visibility low and it's starting to settle...

I'm envious - it's a lovely location - been up walking there a few times.  Here's a photo I took this summer (it's looking very different on the cam at the moment!):

Wet snow/sleet mix here now and wind a bit gusty.

Lovely picture - and yes it does look a little different now!  You're looking down on Eastside Farm there from the hill we call Pinky - the Kips are in the left of the frame, Scald Law (the highest point in Pentlands in the middle) and the South Black Hill to the right.  A great spot for a walk - though maybe not today!

Altnafeadh, Rest and Be Thankful, Tyndrum and Glen Ogle all have heavy lying snow

Still snowing but easing off. Hasn't turned to rain yet surprisingly. Didn't settle despite trying very hard at one point.

Pinky - haven't heard that one before!  I wonder where that comes from.  Official name is given on the map as Cap Law, but this is supposedly an error and it should really be Gap Law.

nice run from the ECM this morning and not the first time it has hinted at this and although there wasn't a great deal in the mean the other day to back it up there was a little hint and its good to see the same pattern return and the fact it has might mean if we want some decent cold then this might be the place to look for it.

below the ECM day 10 pressure and 850's charts and its looking lovely

post-18233-0-30280400-1392215730_thumb.gpost-18233-0-93607300-1392215713_thumb.gpost-18233-0-20552800-1392215731_thumb.gpost-18233-0-81447300-1392215730_thumb.g

now on to the mean and still nothing solid for the op but still little hints with minimal ridging at day 8 then something is left there after but not a lot

post-18233-0-76660200-1392215732_thumb.gpost-18233-0-59078800-1392215733_thumb.gpost-18233-0-30935600-1392215734_thumb.g

should we be going down the path of the op in the future the mean 850's show a good cold pool developing over scandi

post-18233-0-99254700-1392215731_thumb.g

now the mean 500 anomalies charts and we see at day 8 and 9 it looks good for what the op was pointing toward then we see a trough develop to our west at day 10 so a little hard to read on this but will keep eye on it through the coming days

post-18233-0-75174600-1392215749_thumb.gpost-18233-0-33460700-1392215750_thumb.gpost-18233-0-11618400-1392215751_thumb.g

also this mornings ens have turned a bit colder than they were in the medium term they do start to go milder at the end but they always will and its just good to see some good charts in the op and then this turning cooler as well

post-18233-0-49363800-1392215751_thumb.g

now its not just the ECM pointing toward this its just the best looking out of the lot but heres the others

GFS 0z

post-18233-0-68815200-1392215771_thumb.p

GEM 0Z looked like it was getting there then gave up

post-18233-0-01372100-1392215752_thumb.ppost-18233-0-20969900-1392215771_thumb.p

and yesterdays 12z JMA was also pointing towards this as well

post-18233-0-31628200-1392215772_thumb.g

also the ECM 12z from the other day which was the one who started it all off and gave us the first hint at this evolution

post-18233-0-24650500-1392216408_thumb.g

now as we know well from this winter cold is never easy to get but with all models hinting towards this type of evolution and with the time of winter it is and with the PV starting its packing to go on holiday in the south pole for the summer then this might actually be our best shot this winter at something cold as the whole system might be a little more willing to allow this to happen but as always it will just be a case of sitting and watching run by run to see how we get along but with so many models hinting towards this it is a real possibility moving forward.

Rain on here now in Dyce and it doesn't look at all sleety never mind anything more exciting, even in the heavier bursts. Temp currently 4.4/2.5C so no surprise really.
