Lord Chris Smith, head of Environ quango, is a townie from the most Metropolitan govt the UK have ever had - one of Blair and Brown's cronies.

Under his control the Environ quango has paid v little attention to people who live in areas like the Somerset levels.

He's preferred to focus the quango on developing and maintaining various nature reserves, at the expense of the human population. Typical townie, from a past metropolitan govt, with little understanding of the countryside and how its human population live with the natural wildlife.

Also under Blair, led by Seaman Prescott, they allowed mass development of areas in the UK, which were (and still are) prone to flood.

Floodplains are there to flood - it's natures way of providing an area to flood naturally, when the need arises.

I posted earlier that the areas effected are going to need a lot of funding to recover. This should naturally come from the overseas aid budget at some point we got to help ourselves.

very true and mostly ignored in almost every area of the country, at least in England.

Too true John........and although, to many, it reads/sounds heartless, i genuinely cannot understand why people choose to live on a floodplain. Or why successive governments, esp the last ones under Blair and Brown, actively encouraged developers to build civil dwellings on high-risk areas of the UK.On the subject of the Somerset levels, most civil dwellings are older and there are not many new builds on the levels. The villages that are left are, in the main, older historical villages, with only limited number of newer builds. Edited by Bristle boy

For me, the section of your post I have highlighted is my main question in all of this and it is one that never gets answered appropriately by the powers that be. Not forgetting that the extremes of climate change exacerbating such issues are also playing their part. I believe the Somerset levels to name but one region would have now received something like 400mm of rainfall over just the space of 50 days or so, that is monsoon like in nature. Tis time to stand up and smell the coffee and adjust our ways IMHO.

At least our farmers still have their SFP benefits tucked away under the mattress.

How much are those SFPs in actual value and as a townie, I wouldn't want to necessarily work the 16 hour shifts and 365 day shifts either, would you?

Some folk have all the heart and yes this and your post will probably get moderated but it is worth saying.

I think some folk might find these comments from the SW and CSE thread from last night rather revealing, especially as the original comment came from a farmer's daughter perspective, not from the few like myself who are unaffected by the cost of farm food etc. or are we?

And our politicians continue to squabble and point the finger of blame at everyone else.

Quite a good piece written BEFORE this winter, just to put things in context and set the scene.

The Government can deploy troops halfway round the world to fight in wars, but cant send them to make sandbags and help with rescues.

If you're not angry, you should be..

UK flooding put into context not press hysteria http://t.co/LGKBbG9h1b

I have to say im not sure that number of 40 is correct. Ive seen so many photos of flooded villages that im sure the number must be higher.

See here as just one photo:

Somebody mentioned that no work was carried out after the floods in Sheffield in 2007. There was quite a lot of work done on the Don for example to clear out natural dams that had built up. Council also briefly decided it was a good idea to clear road side drains to prevent local flooding but have since gone back to bad ways.

Although we've had only one dry day this year the rivers seem to be coping very well at the moment.

If this was Bangladesh not Somerset we would be sending the Red Cross and disaster relief aid - charity should begin at home IMO !

Compared to the iconic image of Churchill standing in a bombed and wrecked House of Commons with the danger of falling rubble in his hat, top coat and cane

Sorry I find comments like this really annoying.  Equating a picture of one flooded house/business with the devastating floods in another country is shocking.

When we have 1000's dead, 10,000's homes destroyed, 100,000's homeless, outbreaks of cholera, no fire brigade, no RNLI, no SAR, no council emergency shelters, etc, etc. then maybe, just maybe you can bemoan the lack of international assistance.

The flooding is tragic for those affected, but really people need to wind their sense of perspective back a little.
