Hobart ( pop 215,000 ), capital of Tasmania. Situated at sealevel at the base of Mt. Wellington ( 1270m ). Climate temperate, maritime.

December - First month of summer

Temperatures rebounded after a cool November to make this a warmer month than average ( mean 1981-2010 comparison) but much cooler than the previous December which began Hobart's warmest summer.

Two days exceeded 30 degrees and a further 4 were above 25 degrees but they were scattered throughout the month ensuring no lengthy warm spells. With high pressure centered usually just to the north of Tasmania fronts incoming from the Southern Ocean were weak producing just a shower or two, with the exception of a strong front on the 5th producing the months wettest day ( 12mm ) with overnight snow settling near 1000m. A low pressure trough extended down from the mainland on the 23rd bringing light rain ( 8mm ) - this was the months second wettest day. Generally very mild and dry overall after a very wet spring.

Average maximum:  21.2 ( +0.8 )

Average minimum:  11.8 ( +0.5 )

Rainfall:  28mm ( average 56mm )

Rain days ( +1mm ):  6/from 11

Extremes in daily temperature for December ( Records since 1882 )

Highest maximum:  35.5 19th ( Record 40.6 in 1897 )

Lowest maximum:  15.3 20th ( Record 10.2 in 1964 )

Highest minimum:  15.5 ( Record 23.9 in 1920 )

Lowest minimum:  7.7 ( Record 3.3 in 1906 )

My statistics for central Reading in December 2013:Average maximum: 9.4Average minimum: 3.1Average for month: 6.2Highest maximum: 13.4 (December 16)Lowest maximum: 5.2 (26)Highest minimum: 12.0 (16)Lowest minimum: -2.2 (29)

Air frosts: 4Rainfall: no data available for this site; Reading University shows around 110mm for the month, which is around 175% of average.Sunshine: no local data availableNo snow reported

Thick fog (visibility less than 200m) persisted all day on the 11th.A long stream of depressions from the Atlantic produced a mild and very wet month, with several storms in the second half of the month, notably during the night of the 22/23rd.

2013 overall:

Average maximum: 14.6Average minimum: 6.8Average for year: 10.7Highest maximum: 32.3 (August 1)Lowest maximum: 0.1 (January 16)Highest minimum: 19.0 (July 23)Lowest minimum: -4.8 (March 31)

Warmest month: July (20.1)

Coldest month: February (3.6)

Air frosts: 45

Days with falling snow: 18

Days with lying snow at 0900: 8

Days with thunder: 7

Rainfall (Reading University): 730mm (average 630mm)

Statistically the average maximum and minimum temperatures recorded here are almost exactly the official 1981-2010 averages for Reading University's site - our readings here are usually slightly higher, meaning that it was probably a slightly colder than average year overall here, and there were noticeably more air frosts than average.  The warmer than average second half of the year therefore didn't quite balance out the cold start.  The very wet October-December period contributed to a wetter than average year overall.

December 2013

Mild, very wet and quite dull

It was slightly wetter than Dec 2012 (257mm) and the wettest month since Nov 2009 (309mm). In spite of the first 11 days only having 7mm rain the rest of the month was very wet totalling 258.7mm. Plenty of mild weather and nothing especially cold, the coldest night being a mere -2.2c with fewer than normal frosts. However there was also a lack of notably mild weather as the highest reading was just 12.3c (15th). With the very unsettled and often showery nature hail featured on 9 days. The wettest and windiest weather occurred 14th to 27th when gale force gusts were common and 200mm fell in this fortnight alone

1st – 7th: High pressure dominated plenty of dry weather just some light rain at times. Temperatures close to average and a mostly cloudy spell.

8th – 12th: Mostly dry and high pressure dominated still, mild with some sunny intervals.

13th -16th: Unsettled but very mild; cloudy and often windy with spells of rain, some heavy

17th –27th: Very unsettled and disturbed with a succession of deep lows crossing the Atlantic towards the UK. Often windy, gales at times with frequent rain or showers, often heavy and with hail. 18th and 23rd both getting over 30mm rain with localised flooding. 5 days in this spells saw wind gusts exceeding 50mph, strongest gust of 60mph on the 23rd. Thankfully the Festive period saw a brief respite. Sunshine continued at a premium although most days saw a few sunny intervals.

28th – 29th: Mainly dry with sunny spells and night frosts and less windy

30th – 31st: More heavy rain, localised flooding and strong winds; some sunshine and quite mild

No days with fog, snow, sleet or hail.

The rain gauge started working again this month, after the problems during November.  It was a mild December, and was slightly warmer than November had been, by both day and night.  There was only one frosty night (the second night of air frost was a quirk of the standard 0900-0900 recording system as the “minimum†on the 27th happened just after 9am on the 26th) and there were no days with sleet or snow falling.

The first half of the month was anticyclonic and dry, with variable amounts of cloud but most of the days were cloudy, while temperatures were above average, especially during the second week which was the warmest week of the month, thanks to south-westerlies on the northern flank of the high.  The second half was unsettled and windy but with plenty of sunshine in between the rain belts.  The only cold day was Boxing Day which got no higher than 3C during daylight hours, though the temperature rose sharply during the evening as the biggest weather system of the month approached, with some very windy weather on the 27th although there was no significant structural damage.

The mildest December since 1988 and driest since 2005. The month was typical of a predominantly south-westerly winter month at this location, with shelter from the Welsh Mountains and Pennines leading to lots of mild, dry and sunny weather. It was in fact the second sunniest December in 15 years and the ninth with above average sunshine in the last decade. It was also only the fourth December in 34 years without an air frost and along with 1988 the only to be completely frostless and snowless together. Rainfall was generally low, especially in the first half, when only 3.6mm fell.

After a calm first two days the month was almost completely unsettled throughout. It was exceptionally windy, with gusts above40mph on four days and the highest mean wind speed I've ever recorded. The gust of 47mph on the 5th was the highest since January 2005, with fallen trees nearby and severe tidal flooding to the local area in the evening. Pressure fell to 964.3hPa on Christmas Eve, the lowest reading since March 2008. Christmas Day was a sunny and cool day, recording the lowest mean temperature of the month.

Overall a December devoid of any wintry weather, but saved from being totally dire by large amounts of sunshine, interesting storms and low amounts of rainfall.

December 2013 Global Weather Extremes Summary

Published: 8:00 PM GMT on January 18, 2014

December 2013 Global Weather Extremes Summary

December 2013 saw a variety of temperature extremes both cold and warm and in some cases at the same locations. The most notable was the heat wave in Argentina. However, in general, extreme variability was the theme thanks to extreme amplitudes of the jet stream. Severe flooding affected portions of Brazil, Kenya, and the Middle East where a cold snap and rare heavy snow also occurred in some locations.

Below are some of the month’s highlights.

Agree with all of that but they somehow missed the extreme cold in North America knocker? Ignore that I clicked on the wrong link it's showing, but why isn't it a headline for your link? Edited by Sceptical Inquirer
