The number of weather events and earthquakes resulting in insured losses climbed last year to 880, 40 percent higher than the average of the last 30 years, according to Munich Re, the world’s largest reinsurer.

How much of this is attributable to the fact there are more people, more people with insurance and more property to be damaged?

There's a lot of buildings being built on flood plains these days.

That's true but looking at the Wunderground link and breakdown by country it's very difficult to assess.
