Police unveil £240k supercar

Recommended Posts

Police have announced the latest tool in their armoury to keep Britain’s roads safe and free from criminals – a £240,000 supercar that can hit top speeds of 207mph. Bedecked in the police’s distinctive reflective livery and made by Formula 1 supremoes McLaren, the car can achieve 0-60mph in less than three seconds. The specially-adapted two-seater will be unveiled this weekend at a car show in Birmingham and police hope it will help to break down barriers between the general public and the boys in blue.

PC Angus Nairn (star of hit TV BBC 1 show Motorway Cops) who will be behind the wheel when the car hits the roads, said: ‘Everyone who sees the McLaren wants to come and talk about it. ‘The car breaks the ice and gives us the opportunity to get across the safety message – especially about the dangers of excess speed.’ The McLaren Spider 12C has a 3.8 litre twin-turbo engine with 600 brake horsepower, surely enough to make even Jeremy Clarkson quiver…

But for all its impressive specifications, the McLaren is not practical for everyday patrol use. ‘There’s not a great deal of luggage space and it has gull-wing doors that open outwards and upwards so you have to leave plenty of space when you park,’ PC Nairn explained. Instead, the car will be used on Britain’s motorways by officers from the Central Motorway Group in the Midlands.

That'll do the chines take away very quickly. Several forces could actually use it  to get there takeaways in the same night.

Great car, but not sure 240k is justified on a Police Car?

How about M5, RS4... Something like that?

It won't. I know one way they can do that. One have the old bobby on the beat again. Get them to talk to people. Also be an open Police force and stop closing ranks when it goes tits up.

That versus a speed hump = how much again?

No speed humps on the motorway however I have seen some very deep pot holes on motorways like the M18. probably been fixed by now or perhaps not.

That's a very sensible but radical view The PIT. It's not going to happen though. They are being given all these new laws and toys to play with. Don't think for one minute they won't use them at the drop of a hat.

Hardened crims could be hot wiring helicopters next...

Yeah but they will have learn how to fly them - a lot easier said than done.

Yet another misleading news story about the police. The car has been "loaned" to the CMPG, (free of charge from McLaren), as a display item for the Autosport show at the NEC this weekend. Once the show is over the car will be given back to McLaren. The cars, the stand space, the graphics, the lights have been provided free of charge and even the police officers at the show are there on days off voluntarily.

Having a display item like that means people are more likely to visit the stand and allows the police to engage with the public to highlight some of the common dangers like drink/drug driving, speeding etc.

Sound like a good bit of PR then
