its good we are finally starting to see the models get a handle on the blocking and hopefully wont be too long till we see a bit of cold and snow.

I'm not a greedy person something like this will do for starters as a little taste

Nice picture of a sundog:

A couple weeks ago the temperature hovered at 4 below zero as the sun rose over the Illinois River. Amazing things can happen in such frigid conditions. Because of the nearly 40 degree temperature difference between the air and the water, steam formed and swirled around the river. The steam turned into ice crystals and drifted up into the air. The ice crystals then acted as prisms, refracting the light rays from the sun on the right. That is how this bright and colorful sundog was formed. This view is from Eagle Cliff at Starved Rock State Park.

Some wow charts around this morning for folks who will benefit from an Easterly. All the main models dialling in on a cold surge from the continent and plenty of snow. North sea snow machine about to be turned on, hope it has enough 'energy' in the tank to deliver for those further inland.

ECM / GFS / UKMO

Positive being these charts are not out in extreme la la land as far as the models concern, still we all know that went wrong last December so still need to track the output carefully.

Bitter airmass. GEM living up to it's acronym - really is a GEM.

Well it certainly is a good morning! What a turnaround. All runs singing from the same cold/snow outlook within a very short time-frame. Better get those LJs looked out HC!Posted Image

Now that's what I call eye candy! I'm not getting my hopes up that we'll have a visit from the Beast from the East, it very rarely manages to shift it's a*se this far west, but even a minus 1 or 2 would do. Currently raining here, temp 6.3. Hardly worthwhile looking the thermals out.

Your post shows the proposed dramatic change well Lorenzo. I was wondering what is the chance (of the initial low that stalls) turning to snow? End of March 2013... I realise it is a bit early for that but it would appear to be IMBY the best shot of significant snow as opposed to light wintry showers...

EDIT: I have just seen Snowking's post in the MOD, seems promising as long as it makes it to me...

Awww do I have to?

There's far less chance of this going wrong than something which appears in F.I. at +240hrs or deeper, only for it to get to +120hrs and start falling apart.

Appears my drunken pleas for your return last night worked a treatPosted Image

That's what I liked about this build up as well - very understated but you could see that it was very definitely heading somewhere interesting. Now we're at a point where there's interest at a very short range which is probably a more promising setup than I would've thought when this evolution started. Even I'm kind of taken aback by just how impressive things are looking.

Another point I should've made last night - a UK high ridging northwards is one of the most reliable precursors to a decent cold spell IMO:

What do we have modelled at +96?

Posted ImagePosted Image

Now the positioning of the trough is going to be the key here because there's still more than enough time for the pattern to sink into the continent and leave us with either a very transient easterly or indeed nothing at all other than cold HP. On the other hand, there's still time for the models to pick up on more undercutting which would prop up the block and keep the cold easterly in place for even longer.

Wonder if the METO and the Beeb will start to pick up on the possible cold next week....anyone want to place a bet on when it will be mebntioned??
