Fair enough, it is marginally better in the reliable for some parts but I guess I look for deeper cold because I live in a beach hut... And work not far from the north coast of Sutherland at an altitude of about 40m these days, unlike a few years back. <sighs>

It's pretty rough I guess, folks like yourself and Hawesy in Crail need some proper deep cold (or one of the few wind direction which avoids any coastal modification) to get decent snow. If we can get that slight southward correction -8C could easily turn into -12C, and those charts look quite similar to that February 2001 easterly which was particularly snowy for some parts of the northeast (not sure on the specifics other than I think we were too far south/close to the coast in that instance), but it's liable to end up correcting, ideally a bit further southwest, in the next 5 days.

Well, we've had everything here today, hail, rain, sleet, sun....all we need is some snow to complete the four types of weather in one day. Maybe next week then?

We had a microscopic 2 second flurry around lunchtime. The wind is freezing though and the temp is already down to 1c here.

Evening all,

It's turned colder, +0.8c here in Crail at the moment under clear skies. I'm aware that some locales (Prestwick for one) are still to record an air frost this meteorological winter!

Looking at the models, if I lived on higher ground (i.e. above 150m-200m) I'd be reasonably confident of seeing at least one decent snowfall in the next 5-7 days. For those of us in the lowlands temporary slight and/or slushy deposits may be as good as it gets (personally I'd rather do without if that proves to be the case - i prefer 'proper snow' or none at all - not that it will be an issue here anyway!)

It's all pretty finely balanced as LS, BUS and others point out (thanks as always for the summaries guys)...as is often the case in a Scottish winter I expect 'marginal' will be mentioned a lot in the coming week!

Snowed here a few times today but the latest Shower about half an hour ago was the heaviest and gave a slight covering on the cars. Melted though

Ls, where were you living in Feb 2001?

I was working in London at the time and missed that event. It started as rain on Saturday and turned to settling snow Saturday evening and it continued to snow for the next day or so then turned back to sleet. However, my folks tell me the snow was fairly deep in Baintown. Levenmouth and the coastal strip was snowless, as usual. When I returned home for a few days about 1 week later, there was still snowdrifts lying around the edges of the fiields. On the higher ground at 200masl, just to the north, there was still a full, deep cover with huge snowdrifts.

Nor Cornwall, which ironically is where Ms HC Posted Image  is just now. She wouldn't mind... especially if it could be towed up here! Posted Image

Just on 0C now, been there or thereabouts since about 8 this evening. The car's covered in wonderful frosty ferns, the grass is crunchy and the sky is black. I see nebulae...

now the 120hr fax chart and the red arrow it looks like a second high pressure being there like the JMA was showing a few days ago with an arctic high

post-18233-0-48818500-1390520913_thumb.g

is this just the way they have drawn it or have they picked up on something not in the models

EDIT: just ignore that just realised that meteociel have put an N next to the times but not updated the charts so that's yesterdays 12z

Morning from Berlin where it's currently -6c with a bit of light snow floating about. Max temp since I arrived has been about - 3c/-4c. Last night was absolutely baltic with a strong wind whipping up lying snow. This week has saved my sanity LOL

It's been a long time coming but it looks as though winter may finally be on the way. There has been a good trend towards colder and snowy conditions over the last couple of days and if this firms up over the weekend we're in business.
