Winter 13 /14 has finally gone and good riddance to it here is the final data for Darlington

49mm

Average 59.2mm

January

82mm

Average 54.3mm

February

53mm

Average 43.5mm

Total rainfall for winter 13 / 14 is 184mm

The longer term average for winter is 157mm

So overall we are 27mm above average

March is statistically our driest month

May the 2nd driest and February the 3rd driest

February came in just below my lowest estimate I posted on the 24th

46mm of rain has fallen with the average 43.5mm another 4 days of February so I estimate a final figure of between 55mm and 65mm

Been a crazy period of wet weather, think it will be a long time before we see the likes again. Have recorded wetter individual months before but never 3 such very wet ones in together. Autumn 2000 was probably wetter though.

Have received as much rain by the end of February as we did last year by early August. Past 3 years cumulative rainfall:

It could not rain a drop until August and you'd still be at average...

JAN: 80.4mm (142%)

FEB: 45.8mm (108%)

126.2mm so far in 2014.

Winter as a whole saw 151.6mm, which is 94% of the 1981-2010 average.

Worth noting that Bobby's winter total is nearly 2.5x what we had in all of 2013 (491.0mm). Amazing difference between east and west.

Spring 2000 or at least april 2000 gave record flooding on the severn I think that was the year.

Summer of 95 will know.

Spring 1998 saw bad flooding in the Midlands as indeed did April 2000

News from Australia.

Jan-April Rainfall 2014 ( and % total of long-term mean for this period ..)

Darwin..............1253mm.......103%

Brisbane.............338mm.......73%

Sydney...............299mm........63%

Canberra...........246mm........115%

Adelaide............178mm........178%

Melbourne.........152mm.........75%

Hobart...............109mm.........59%

Perth................... 32mm........39%

Boom times in Adelaide/South Australia, but coming off a low base. I feel it is great news for the ecologically rich Murray river system ( the longest river in Australia ) which completes its 1550 mile course into the sea off South Australia. The Millennium Drought which ravaged the continent almost ended it's life for the first time, and the wetlands are still in a state of recovery. With El Nino lurking on the horizon and destined to dry out the east side of the country it's a good start to the year for the wildlife, and the farmers there.
