We all started somewhere The MOD is a perhaps daunting place to post so these quieter threads are a good place for such questions. Just read the forum guides and the MOD and you'll catch up quickly. If you follow the discussion it will eventually sink in... Although that tactic was not so successful for me with regard to the stratospheric predictions thread, they use big words there

 

When I joined in 2009 this thread was very helpful in the sense that I could post my thoughts here without feeling 'stupid' or having my post get lost among hundreds of others during busy times. The learners area helps immensely, as does reading the MT (particularly either the in depth thread or going in during quiet times when the coldie/mildie arguments aren't blighting the thread). Of course I still mostly stick to posting here anyway because it's far more enjoyable but I've learned a huge amount in my 4 years on the forum so far.

I get totally lost with the strat stuff aswell like u say with all the big words plus I have no backround at all in physics only thing I am learning is how to read some of the charts properly.

Totally agree apart from the part which states that this thread is 'far more enjoyable'. It's definitely a great thread but nothing can beat the MOD thread with an impending cold spell which may or may not materialise. The dispair of December 2012's beast from the east debacle and then the euphoria of the SSW coming into force by pulverising the PV resulting in the gigantic snow event (IMBY) after the equinox, in late march.  Really roaring wind here in the last 2 hours which can be heard above kids hilarity at various TV programmes.What sort of damage will we see in the morning and will the presents arrive?

Wind has started to pick up in the last hour here with some loud gusts which according to the nearest weather station is around 45mph.

 

Few minutes ago the lights were flickering as well.

the charts show a big centre but this image looks like something spinning up close to land

It really should be legal to tranquilize kids on Xmas Eve, manic doesn't quite cover it, add into that a teething 8 month yr old, carnage , all in zzzz and looking forward to the frenzied excitement of Xmas morning. 

 

Re: Model Thread, I remember first finding this forum and registering then not posting much, then coming back to it and asking GP a dumbass question which he dismissed in a one liner, I thought, right really need to understand what the hell he is going on about, it took a fair time before I would even dream of posting in there, simply due to the massive learning curve involved, and especially when you are new to a subject and there is so much great analysis going on.

 

It really is like opening up Pandora's Box when you don't know anything at all, let alone deciphering which posters to follow more closely. That's after figuring out the wealth of material (models) to review to get a handle on things. It is exhilarating when there is a real hunt for cold on, and the GFS churning out 4 times a day keeps the soap opera ticking over, soon becomes quite addictive.  You pretty much learn something new everyday on the forum.

 

We all end up weary eyed model watchers by the end of a Winter season that's for sure. The technical and strat. threads to me hold interest as they are away from the 'mainstream' in meteorology, although certainly becoming more readily referenced over the last two years.

 

Also it's great to see atmospheric science deliver new methods, such as the SAI ( Snow Advance Index) or OPI (October Pattern Index) and test these against forecasting the medium to long range.

 

Blawin a Hoolie here this evening, strongest period of sustained gusts all day, better late than never ! Round about 960mb here and low maintains it's depth at 934mb, seemingly in not much of a hurry to move off NNE.

Getting very lively here now, trees out the back are creaking away and wind is roaring through, can hear bins knocking about and the wind whistling through.
