Aircraft would use a lot of fuel heading into the Jetstream+storm I'd expect....

Talking of fuel today's storm is super fueled, I can only say that everywhere is at risk of affects from this big storm in one way or another, and affecting on Tue too.

Seems to have calmed down a tad here in the last hour. Seems as if the peak of the gusts for my area with top out around midnight tonight and the early hours.

925mb in Stornoway. Posted Image Posted Image

Katrina - 902mb.

Intriguing fact.  Here's a synop from Katrina.

ECM showing a small secondary low skirting the main storm centre, this would really ramp up the wind speeds.

I'm pretty sure there's a thread to discuss Media coverage?

Weather in the general media (Newspaper features etc)

If it's not what you're looking for specifically, you could start one? :)

Don't know if its been mentioned elsewhere - this storm is known as Cyclone 'Dirk'.

Dirk? wierd name for a storm. Why not call her Saint Nicholas?

Looking at that secondary low just forming off Ireland. What consequences do you think this will have on our already forecast windspeeds. Is this likely to squeeze a little more creating even higher windspeeds. Did not the 87 storm develope pretty late on similar to this secondary low. Not for one instance suggesting that but very interesting development

my thoughts on highest gusts for uk

SOUTHERN ENGLAND = 80mph maybe 90mph for southeast

MIDDLE ENGLAND = 65mph

NORTHERN ENGLAND = 80mph

SOUTHERN SCOTLAND = 90mph possibly a little higher

SCOTTISH CENTRAL BELT = 100mph maybe a little more

NORTHERN IRELAND = 115 mph

NORTH WEST SCOTLAND = 115mph+

NORTH EAST SCOTLAND = 95mph

SOMEWHERE IN HIGHLAND SCOTLAND = 150mph+

115mph ? maybe at a top of a mountain - which chart is showing that as a predicted speed please ?

and 150 ?

northern Ireland and the northwest of Scotland have always been forecast to have the highest winds and 150mph in the Scottish highlands is easily achievable

Funny isn't a little secondary feature with a pressure point of 95X mb's most low's would be proud to get record that pressure and be regarded a major system.

Calmer tomorrow, but one thing i've noticed for the forecast is south westerly winds for our area but temps quite low forecast. South westerlies normally bring us mild to v mild temps.

plus highest wind gust in the south so far is 87mph and that's with the worst still to hit so they values could easily come off

I think 173 mph has been recorded at cairngorm summit !!..?

RAF Saxa Vord (cool name!!) holds the unofficial British record for wind speed, which in 1962 was recorded at 177 mph (285 km/h) — just before the measuring equipment blew away.

I reckon this has/will put st Jude to the sword. Still windy here, and 70mph forecast for overnight period. Also this little shortwave that has immediately cropped up could well prove to be quite a troublemaker too. We will need to watch this very carefully. Hope everyone is staying safe this evening.
