Has anyone seen the storms on the near Continent, from the same area that crossed S. England earlier. They are huge!

That is a very powerful storm for January, in this country it would be a powerful storm in July.

 

Some interesting opportunities showing up for the coming weekend. There could be further isolated lightning in the showers around overnight before an area I am interested in which looks to move up from the Channel across the capital and up into EA. Look at how low these ELT's are!!!

That storm European system still seems to be getting bigger. Anyone any idea how common it is to see something like that in jan?

Has anyone seen the storms on the near Continent, from the same area that crossed S. England earlier. They are huge!

 

This was indeed a formidable storm for the third of January! Here in Holland, a wide swath of lighting strikes occured over the country, as seen in the above pictures. Moreover, there are also a few reports of possible tornadoes (EF0), though they have yet to be verified. And finally, some reports of hail (verified) have also been made.

A clear intense line of convection can be seen from Luxemburg all the way to Amsterdam, which produced the lighting and very intense rain for a short period of time.

 

What is also very interesting to see is the very sharp temperature drop which was accompanied by the system. The graph below shows a sudden temperature decrease of about 5*C (!) during the passage of the storm in Wageningen (Holland)!

 

 

However, what is also interesting to note is that a maximum temperature of 11.9*C has been measured, about 6.7*C higher than average!

 

Precipitation data from the same weather station also shows a maximum of 50 mm/h in that place, which is rather remarkable for mid-winter!

 

 

When the line of convection was moving over SW Holland, a gust of up to 169 km/hr has been measured at that place. This data could be slightly too high, though a gust of 144 km/h has also been measured.

 

 

There are currently still some features over England which might develop in new storms.

 

EDIT: The sounding of Wageningen (WRF model) also showed something very remarkable during the storm (18Z). It showed the dewpoint decreasing to dramatically low levels during the storm. Does anybody have an explanation for this?

 

 

Concluding, it has been an extreme event in many ways, it will therefore be a day here that won't be forgotten easily. And perhaps there is even more to come.

Another storm just rattled through here with around 7 flashes of lightning and thunder combined with heavy rain and hail.

Just had an overhead thunderstorm here, several flashes including fork lightning, one strike was really close and seemed to hit something a few hundred yards away, almost instant booming thunder. torrential rain and hail as well.

Lol, more thunder and lightning past few days than the past few summers combined.

another thunderstorm in the SE welsh valleys. ~ Is that the 4th one today ? ~ All containing hail! ~ This last storm nearly blew down a tree, it was blowing like i'd never seen in my life! ~ As for the hail, I said out loud "what the hell" as it I could hear very large hail getting ever closer and louder!Another two stormy showers on their way, can't wait to see what gifts they come with A tornado perhaps?

4th thunder day here in the last 7 with rumbles heard at 5am, and between 5 and 6pm - most active period since at least November 2009, possibly longer.  We tend to get more storms / thundery showers here near the SW Wales coast during the winter half-year, but not used to this many in one week!

Very intense thunder around 8pm here on Sussex coast - opposite IoW. Made the entire house actually shake twice, making toys fall over etc. Never known anything like it - even in the summer, let alone in Jan.

Images are of the storm today around from around 12:30/12:45 this deep rumbling thunderstorm moved over Stanwell and Heathrow! torrential rain the very squally gusts and hail-this was in the mix with the rain and small, not settled though like some areas north of here that got white out seen some amazing pics of the hail! for the thunder at least 5 maybe 7/8 deep heavy booming flat shakers, 2 were very bright lightning, one was a shocking thunderbolt. was dusk at lunch time. It's January, quite a surprise today and exciting too.
