1.5 cm of lying snow here after moderate-heavy snow showers late afternoon and early evening. Hopefully the first air frost of the month tonight as the temperature is already 0.3c.

We will hopefully have a kick-ass rest of the winter, it has a 40s feel to it methinks, ie, more snow than cold

still below 0 at -0.9C, could be my first decent frost since easter

18Z shows a very cold/fresh Xmas eve, snow though unlikely at low levels

Just in from work and my car door was iced shut and the roads were lethal.

VERY ICY tonight. Untreated roads could be bad in the morning. Take care all.

There may be ice on the ground, but the temperature isn't dropping properly. 2C air temperature now, even though it's been clear and calm for 6 hours. This has been a constant theme of 2013- lack of really cold nights despite plenty of cold setups. Despite all that snow in Jan and Mar we were hard-pressed to see anything below -2C, and only managed one night in March below -5.

The first air frost of the month last night and 1.5cm of lying snow this morning; can it get any better than this ?

was a very good frost early today, most surfaces white, Xmas Day on ecmwf 12Z looks cold, dry and frosty, same for boxing day, snow unlikely at low levels though

27th looks like a mild sector day

Although their could be potential for some showers (possibly wintry) on Christmas Day, the direction of the Westerly flow would probably mean the Welsh mountains could act like daleks and exterminate all the showers and prevent 'em reaching the Midlands. Plus, the current Netweather 10 day forecast does show it being dry for here on that day. (suppose it could change still).

Blowing a gale to severe gale here at the moment, just as the front is coming through! Good job I've not repaired the fence from last week's storms!

If mid-December equates to mid-autumn, when in your opinion does winter start?

Generally around very late Jan, when the Atlantic lows die down, varies of course each year, generally Feb to Apr is the quiet Atlantic, not many low after low Febs

just a damn shame by then sun is high, so not as much snow will remain on clear days

just means that on average late Dec to early Jan, is the wettest and windiest time of the year, this weather is to be expected now, not snow, sun and calm high pressure weather (even mild)

My only hope is starting to be that this is like the Decemebr before 62/63 winter, which was unusually mild - does anyone who has access to historical charts see any similarities?

Looking like 2013 may leave us the same way it came in...very wet!

Although on January 1st 2013...we weren't aware of the great things just around the corner. Maybe we aren't right now as well...who knows?!
