It's been a chilly day here with a high of 4.5c but mostly clear skys, temp now 1.8c so another ground frost tonight unless things rapidly change. Some frost has remained all day from last night in places.

Turning icy out there again now.

Stuck in this endless cycle of wind, rain and 2 days of colder calm. We've been let off lightly with the wind and rain here compared to other parts of the country though.

we have been very lucky, hardly any rain since 23rd Nov, expecting to pay for it though, Early Jan is normally the wettest time of the year and expect the midlands to be hit badly, new years eve and day seem a write off

but yeah, cold tonight been below 0 for 3 hours now, unusual for time of year, which I would still class as late autumn rather than early winter

You can't think three hours below 0c at the end of December is unusual surely ??, stuck at 2c here under cloudy skies again after a clear start to the evening.

hasn't happened often in evenings, more likely early mornings, even so though, you'd expect late Dec to be cloudy, windy and showery and above 0C

It's definitely lacked in the frost department this Autumn/December though, no air frosts only some weak ground frosts, even -3c the other night surprisingly only gave a slight ground frost, was more black ice as ground was so wet, fingers crossed this cloud burns away soon as hurricane rainzilla will be making it's triumphant return in 24 hours time

18Z run not too bad for next weekend, shows wet snow for most, probably watered down mind you by the time it comes

Feb and march best months for snow though, more blocking, weaker Atlantic, more chance of snow, which will look fantastic in the mornings before sun gets up, PM air tends to be crap here, welsh hills kill the showers, only had light/weak hail/sleet showers so far, nothing today or yesterday

PM air in winter is Tommy Tank everywhere except the northern half of Scotland and places further south above about 300m. Even if the showers survive the journey inland it's virtually never cold enough at ground level for more than sleet, even if uppers are sub -5C. And for some reason it's really hard to get air frosts under it even with crystal clear nights- even the sunnier Bartletts can manage that.

Calling it "polar" is wildly inaccurate- it usually originates south of the Arctic Circle and does not cross any sea ice or sub-freezing landmass on its way to us. PM, rPM and the similarly misnamed TM should be called respectively A60, A45 and A30, for "Atlantic" and the approximate latitude they originate, with P (Polar) for "Arctic Maritime",  and C (continental) again split into C60 ("Pc"), C45 (those airmasses originating in S Russia/Black Sea area that are usually hot in summer but cloudy and 5C in winter) and C30 ("Tc").

I agree S 95, We do very well here for snow during PM attacks, one of the most interesting flows over the British Isles, what with the air being so unstable you can expect anything... But warmth.  http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/media/pdf/9/5/No._10_-_Air_Masses_and_Weather_Fronts.pdf

This air mass has its origins over northern Canada and Greenland and reaches the British
Isles on a north-westerly air stream.

Polar maritime is the most common air mass to affect the British Isles. It is normally the air
mass found behind a cold front what has come in off the Atlantic Ocean.

This air mass starts very cold and dry but during its long passage over the relatively warm
waters of the North Atlantic its temperature rises rapidly and it becomes unstable to a great
depth.

No frost last night here as cloud rolled in late evening.

A heavy frost this morning. The overnight temperature here fell to -0.7c

Best make the most of the sunny conditions today, as tomorrow looks like being yet another stormy episode.

I had a look on the model thread earlier, there seems to be no real cold in the offing. I was disappointed, but I still have my fingers crossed for around the 14th of jan for some snow.

Lovely day thus far, near unbroken sunshine and light winds, hovering around 7c, hopefully the cloud should stay away till it's getting dark as the house is warming up nicely :D

Chilly last night, one of the coldest feeling nights since March.

Outlook looks poor for cold, let's hope the storms and heavy rain keep on coming! Keeps things interesting.

Yep, looks like the risk of cold continues to be out in the distance but the risk of storms is increasing again. Tonight will ve very windy with Gales for a time. Some very tight isobars.

Today so far is beautiful with lots of sun. Hard frost last night leaving the ground very white like we had a dusting of snow! Icy patches still around in the shade now too. :)

Plenty of Frost and ice out there still, Obviously in the shade for frost but ice from water running off the hill over pathments and walkways, Well dodgy underfoot in parts.

Very interesting indeed at that elevation- just rubbish lower down. I forgot to mention too, it always seems to come with a bigger than normal lapse rate, hence the difference in weather between 100 and 300m. Not sure it really is the commonest- A30 ("TM") seems commoner to me except between Feb and May when any type can predominate.

Wind's really picked up here and there's very light rain. Temp is 5.9oC. Wonder if we'll lose any more fence panels.

Rain setting in now, expecting wind gusts to pick up throughout the night into tomorrow. We're with you Michael S!! As are millions of others.

But its stopped already! Welsh hills murdering this front, like they never do to weak pesky ones in summer.

Wet 'n windy. An unpleasant contrast to yesterday's blue skies and beautiful frost.
