Possible severe Atlantic storm Wednesday 18th December 2013 onwards

Where Swindon is located, we are usually shielded from the worst of the winds, however that really doesn't seem to be the case today. Gusting just shy of 40mph outside, and 10mm of rain in the last hour or two, and the squall hasn't even hit us yet. I feel very sorry for anyone up north who may be caught up in the Sting Jet later, if it materialises.

Meteoalarm have a red warning out for part of Ireland, stating there is a risk of gusts up to 150km/h (93mph)!

I've just been for a walk in town, lots of Xmas trees down from the sides of shops, slates have fallen, branches down etc .. Locally, the winds have been stronger here than the St Jude storm. That night, wind gusts were high then low for a period of time, tonight it has been relentlessly consistent.

The isobars on the latest atlantic analysis http://meteocentre.com/analyses/map.php?lang=en&map=eur_full&area=eur&size=standard look to be very close and the wind will have gained quiet and amount of inerta as its being driven round the centre of the deeper low to the NW before making land, could be some very high gusts on the NW west coast of Uk and Ireland!!

very defined squall line showing in the trough thats coming through.

Sadly the winds have claimed a life

Woman Dies After Tree Falls On Car

A 23-year-old woman has died after a tree fell on her car during high winds in Mullingar, Ireland. The incident occurred on the Ballymahon Road, near the town's Greenpark Meadow Housing Estate, at about 4.05pm. The woman, who was the only person in the car, was taken to Mullingar General Hospital by ambulance but was pronounced dead at 5.30pm. Bad weather on Wednesday also caused the roof of Cork's railway station to partially collapse, injuring a passenger and disrupting services. Irish weather service, Met Eireann, has issued a "Status Red" severe weather warning for counties Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo.

The alert, in place until 3am on Thursday, means that people should "take action to protect themselves and/or their properties". Gusts of 75mph to 93mph (120 to 150 km/h) are forecast in some areas, as well as high seas. An orange warning is also in place for counties Cavan and Clare, and a yellow warning for Leinster, Monaghan, Roscommon, Tipperary and Waterford. One Twitter user, Anna Leonard, posted: "The weather is so bad in Ireland. A woman is dead in Mullingar because of the wind. Ridiculous. Prayers with those affected!" Around 890 homes are also without power in Neath, south Wales, after high winds brought down a high-voltage power cable, police said.
