Going from memory the position of the low is similar to 1953 that caused so much loss of life with the storm surge down the North sea. There are concerns again about the surge and spring tides although thankfully no danger of a repeat. Coastal flooding still a distinct possibilty.

By many standards not that windy here; but the highest wind speed I've recorded since having a Davis in 2005/6, max 45mph with the airport showing 62mph around the same time. The wind speed never fell below 30mph from 0900-1500 inclusive, unheard of in my back garden.Lived here 24 years and have never known the buses out of Donaster have to divert due to fallen trees, not one this afternoon but 3 times. One can only hope that no more lives are lost and that the predicted storm surge for eastern parts turns out OTT, sadly I suspect not so let us hope everyone is safe even if they are flooded out.

A severe W gale from late morning until around 1400 caused some damage to trees locally, and to my ( large ) fence and pergola which was completely wrecked when I arrived home for lunch.

The wind moderated considerably after 1500 and the short spell of heavy rain around luchitime was followed by a few sleet and snow showers later this afternoon.

Today's gale wasn't quite up to the ferocity of the Burns Day storm or the one in early January 1976 but it was in the top 20 I've recorded since moving here in 1977.
