Tidal Surge Update - 21:30pm

The tidal surge which will affect the Suffolk coastline later tonight is likely to arrive up to an hour earlier than predicted – and may be slightly higher.

The next high tide at Lowestoft was expected at about 11pm.

However, the tidal surge has hit parts of Norfolk about an hour early – and in some cases has been 200-300mm higher than estimated.

Same is to be said when a snow event (what's that eh!) is in progress, you'd be surprised who may be following each and every word of ours.

Sky news at 21:33

Great Yarmouth

The area is expected to see two meter tidal surges in an hour.

13 fire services from as far as Devon and Shropshire helping with floods across norfolk 65 soldiers also helping.

Surely not two metres, it's already at high tide.Is this reliable?

And Dungeness also - the flood defences were found to be not as good as previously thought this year...

Had very bad flooding on the front this evening. Local news said expect the same again in the morning. Amazed how serious this situation has become for everyone down the coast.

The storm surge at Lowestoft appears to be about 2m.

Over the channel in Cuxhaven the surge is about 3m and long lasting.

So as the surge heads south am I right in thinking that it will increase in height as it is funnelled into the much narrower sea areas like the thames estuary?

That's more than possible in some places. Local levels will vary depending in topography.

Dungeness would be affected by a surge up the channel from the SW, not from tonights angle.

Yep.  Next concern for the areas N of The Wash is to assess the state of flood defences before tomorrow's high tides, which will still be Spring tides, so still high.  I'm out again at 4am!
