WOW!

Drove to Herne Bay seafront, and the water is so high it's coming up against the beach huts, it's also nearly as high as the pier! The waves are crashing over the walls onto the road, with a number of stones thrown at cars for good measure. The highest I've seen the sea since living here

About 3 years ago we flew home from holiday and happened to drive past the marina, people were gathered looking out towards the jetty arm so I stopped and had a look, the sea was washing across the arm into the marina,I took some video and photos,I then drove to Hampton car park which looked part of the sea with waves crossing the carpark over the pier into the sea by the car park entrance. I think I am going out to have a look now!!

Didn't expect any flooding here, as not even an alert for this area, the dour seems to be flooding in places. Also the western docks.

Pic here is from a subway flooded by the dour.

Old Leigh has some water coming up the drains but mostly escaped. A few properties have been flooded though. The sea wall has a few inches to spare.

Them few inches to spare may well disappear at the next high tide!I wonder what the situation is between the stretch of c2c line between leigh and chalkwell right now :)

Where abouts on the seafront was that picture taken by the way? I'm trying to picture it in my head

That's what I was going to say jpAlthough it is in our nature to go looking try to resist please its not worth the risk ! So many lovely ppl on here would hate to read somone has got hurt xx

I'm such a poor swimmer, I have to be very careful.

I think the most important thing is to have an exit option.

Nice for people to be concerned though. :)

That picture reminds me of something I saw earlier.

There was a grill on the side of a building, that was just below the flood waterline. From this grill was coming a sound like a fast flowing stream...

It then became obvious that a cellar, or other underground room was filling with water. The sound lessened as the room filled up. I just thought, "what a schoolboy error!" It must have been relatively easy to have blocked that off prior to the flood!

I looked at the railway as much as I could and it seemed all ok. The sea was up to the sea path outside Chalkwell station. The police were blocking the way along the access road by the cockle sheds though. That pic was from next to the casino. Just past there the water was across the westbound carriageway. That wasnt you we met outside the Casino was it Steve, we were the 2 Burly Photographers with Tripods, me and Peter Scott. Went for a look up at Old Leigh as well, pretty impressive seeing as the beach is a full 8 foot below the road where the Mini Roundabout is. Down by the Casino along to Adventure Island has flooding over the road. Pretty much unscathed down here thankfully.

Any one know how Walton is doing? I have a Hut along there and worried it won't be there in the morning. Thanx in advance.

There have unfortunately been issues with huts there. Posted Image I hope yours is okay. I guess daylight will reveal more.

Started out by having a look at Thorpe Bay and the Huts which were taking a pounding a good 2 hours before High Tide, then moved onto Central Southend near the Casino and then Old Leigh.

Morning all, don't think its appropriate today with what went on last night with the storm surge for any light hearted banter, so just wish anyone affected, all the best, and I hope high tides today passes without anymore incidents. Good luck everyone.

Morning all

C2C trains are running normally this morning so far, not sure what the next high tide will have in store for the coastal tracks.

I didn't speak to anyone outside the Casino. Spoke to someone down by Chalkwell station. Quite a few people out last night to witness in the end not a lot thankfully.

Temp is dropping off now it seems.

Morning all.

I've not had a chance to catch up fully on the flooding yet but a quick look in here and media sources seems to indicate there has been some in our region and also a few evacuations? Hopefully no more fatalities but I think there will be some inevitable damage. Lets hope that the worst of it is over and recovery is swift, it seems like many have escaped a 1953 scenario which is positive.

Sad news about Nelson Mandela, but he was a very old man who lived the later part of his life to fulfil a dream of a freeing South Africa from apartheid and bringing people together - a very worthy cause and done with great Statesmanship and dignity.

morning all.

News from back home is that our house came out unscathed thank goodness. Don't know if others were so lucky though. Quite shocking scenes down the coast in Lowestoft though.

Whitstable battered by waves in tidal surge

The town of Whitstable in Kent was battered by large waves overnight, but one photographer who stayed up to see high tide said the water did not breach the flood defences.
