November 2013, Lampeter, Ceredigion

Slightly cold; unsettled to 20th then mostly dry

Although unsettled for the first 3 weeks there were no very wet periods and so the total for the month given the dry latter stages was a below average 111mm. Nothing exceptional temperature wise, a lack of particularly mild weather but there were some hard frosts.

1st – 14th: Unsettled with rain or showers at times, some heavy. A typical mixed period there were sunny intervals but only short breaks between the rain systems. Temperatures around average to quite cool and with slight frosts at times. Only two days reached the mild category, the mildest reading of the month being 14.2c on the 11th. Windy at times with gales 2nd and a gust of 51mph. In spite of high pressure of above 1030mbar arriving on the 12th the unsettled conditions were not stemmed until 15th.

15th – 17th: High pressure close by to the SW gave a generally dry few days although it was mainly cloudy. Temperatures average to mild.

18th – 20th: Turned rather cold and showery, plenty of hail showers and strong winds. Some sunny breaks.

21st – 26th: Dry and rather cold with some hard frosts. High pressure re-exerted with still inversion conditions prevailing. Severe frost on the night of the 23rd down to -7.3c (colder than any official UK station), this was only the lowest November figure since November 29th 2012. Pressure peaked at 1042mbar 26th the highest level since February 2012 (1043mbar)

27th – 30th: Mostly dry with around average temperatures, cloudy apart from the final day of the month which saw an unbroken 7 hours - being the highest estimation of November.

HOBART ( pop 215,000 ) capital of Tasmania, situated at sealevel at the base of Mt. Wellington ( 1270m ). Climate is temperate with a strong maritime influence.

November - Last month of spring

This was the coolest November in Hobart since 2006 ( mean ) and the equal coolest by day ( average maximum ) of the century; tieing with 2001. The next stop for cooler November days is 1976. This month brought an end to a record unbroken run of 24 warmer than average months ( mean 1981-2010 comparison ). Hoorah!

Active low pressure troughs extended southward over the continent forcing high pressure to latitude south of Tasmania. Winds predominant cold southerly off the Southern Ocean, or very cool easterly directly off the Tasman Sea. A surge of deeper colder south-se winds at the end of the first week brought snow to 700-800m and the weather was favourable enough for lying snow to remain on the summit for several days. At times, the continent low pressure trough extended to Tasmania spawning the development of low pressure systems over Tasmanian waters, bringing rain and drizzle and hill fog. An exceptionally cloudy month with less sunlight hours than October and September and close to what was acheived in August, the final month of winter. A notable exception to the cool and gloomy theme was a very warm day on the 6th, with a continental airflow ahead of the first major cold outbreak of the month. There were only 2 other days in November that managed to pass 20 degrees.

The Weather in November

Posted Image

It was quite a sunny and rather dry November, but a little colder than average. Moderate to severe frosts developed after mid-month, especially in Scotland and northern England. Up to 11 November there was periodic rain, but after that it was largely dry, except for 20 November when eastern Scotland and north-east England had heavy rain and some snow. Between 19 and 25 November there were snow flurries as far south as the Chilterns and Cotswolds, and this was the coldest part of the month.

Temperatures

The mean maximum temperature in November ranged from 11.6C at St Mary's, Isles of Scilly, to 5.5C at Dalwhinnie in Inverness-shire. The Central England Temperature (CET) of 6.1C was 1.1 degrees below the long-term average, the lowest since the very cold November of 2010. In the last 100 years, 27 Novembers have been colder. The highest recorded temperature was 16.5C at Exeter, Devon, on 6 November. The month's lowest temperature was -8.1C at Braemar in Aberdeenshire on 25 November.

Rainfall

Averaged across England and Wales there was 64mm of rain or equivalent snow, which is just 61% of the average, with most of the rain coming in the first 11 days of November. It was the driest November for two years, but it is worth noting that November 2011 was the seventh driest in the last 100 years, during which 79 Novembers have been wetter than this year. Scotland averaged 89mm of precipitation, or 77% of average, while Northern Ireland had 60mm, just 55% of average. The wettest location was Achnagart, Wester Ross, which had 274mm. Three places tied for the driest: Inverbervie in Aberdeenshire, Leuchars in Fife, and Leconfield, East Riding of Yorkshire, each had only 22mm.

Sunshine

England and Wales had an average 86 hours of sunshine, which is 123% of the mean and the most in November since 2006. Only 10 Novembers in the last 100 years have been sunnier. Scotland had 76 hours, representing 154% of its average, and Northern Ireland had 80 hours, or 155% of the average. Leuchars, Fife, had the most sunshine with 115 hours, while Lerwick, Shetland, had the least with only 34 hours.

The second coldest November since 1998 and sunniest since 2006. It was a month of homogenously cool weather with no real extremes at either end of the spectrum. Only 10 days managed to reach double figures and only 8 minimas were recorded above 5°C. As a result it was the lowest mean minimum since 2005. Despite four previous minimum temperatures below 1°C, it took until the 26th to record the first air frost. It was also the third consecutive snowless November and had little wind. Only 12 days recorded a gust over 20mph.

The first half of the month was very westerly in nature and so rather wetter than average. Almost half of the expected monthly rainfall fell in the first 10 days. It was also very sunny however, with 71 hours of sunshine in the first 16 days, more than the monthly average of 68 hours.

It then turned drier and anticyclonic around mid-month with fog overnight, but sunshine amounts took a hit. A short-lived north-westerly brightened things up on the 19th, giving the coldest day of the month, before a more potent effort gave the first air frost of the month a week later. Overall the last 10 days were predominantly northerly so rather cold, though after the dull spell mid-month the sunshine total only just managed to give the third sunniest November of the last decade.

Overall, a cool, dry and calm but rather uninteresting November.
