Got back this evening from a conference in Birmingham. Got lucky with the travel compared with some who were heading off by rail. By the time we arrived at Edinburgh airport there was just a gentle but cold breeze. Was quite surprised to find lying snow from just West of Dundee when I got home. Now 0.2C. Mostly clear skies.

When driving up the M90 hit a strangely cold spot near Kinross for just a couple of miles where the car temp fell from +0.5 to -3C but was back to +0.5C by Glenfarg. Didn't appear to be any change in the wind strength or clearness of the sky in the area.

You weren't on this flight to Brum then.

You no snow then? or fallen but not stuck?

A light dusting...sticking no problem but rain today keeps showing large showers reaching here but they most certainly are not...still been nice seeing some light flakes swirling around now and again

No we were later in the afternoon. Noticed some pretty strong gusts around lunchtime in the city centre though. Had died down by the time we left.

Just as well my colleague who is a nervous flyer didn't know about that. He was already Doh a dumb swear filter got the better of meing hisel having heard about the lightning strike on the diverted plane to Newcastle earlier.

oops didn't know that word wasn't allowed.

He tried again then headed to Gatwick.

Thought he was in control of the crabbing there and just needed to kick the rudder and bring her down.... Bottled it ;)Must be scary when your a passenger to hear the engines throttle up and then really cheese you off when you land 200 miles away

Slochd just now...

Caithness looking white too.  The big debate tonight was whether the schools will be open tomorrow. Posted Image another day of teenagers in & out the blooody door.

The Graun STILL has it wrong: '...142mph was recorded over high ground in central Scotland...'  Am I being picky, or is Aonach Mor not actually in the Highlands?

People on the storm thread are going crazy at BBC News & Sky dropping their live feeds and transmitting wall to wall Mandella. Norfolk llfeboat station has fallen into the sea. Some really scary stuff going on down there.  Lots of evacuations.

142mph was on the summit 4000ft up.It's basically pants. The wind speed up a mountain can easily be 50mph more than sea level.Just utter rubbish. If that speed was recorded in the central belt...well I doubt I would still have electricity. But it makes good headlines.

Jings! I kinda thought you must have got this wrong somehow when I red your post, but nope. Hemsby lifeboat station has dropped off Norfolk...They're saying it's an hour earlier than predicted, it's 20-30cm higher than predicted… and "hundreds" of people are disobeying orders and going along to stand on seawalls gawping at the waves. Let's hope there isn't too much Darwinian selection tonight… :(

I just tuned into the news channels to see how the tidal surges were looking and surprised by the extent of the mandela coverage in that not even breaking for 2 mins on the flooding issues

How's Inversneckie this evening?

Cold night out there (just under -1'C) with a very cold wind and covering of snow and everything frozen, also it's Friday tomorrow, so all in all very good indeed! How's the Black Isle?

Morning all. Interesting anomaly here in NE Fife, overnight low at Leuchars was +0.2c (http://www.met.rdg.ac.uk/~brugge/amextremes.html) while I recorded a min of -1.5c in Crail. That doesn't happen too often, I'm typically 2-3c milder than Leuchars at this time of year.

Clear skies, currently -0.5c.

Morning all. Looking all white and pretty outside here - only a dusting though on roads and pavements.

Also, discovered last night that we actually lost a bunch of tiles in yesterdays hoolie Posted Image (did we name it?).

Literally a few flakes here only OTR so we were missing the showers here.

Minimum and currently -1.1C so the frigid uppers are not propagating down to the 2m level.

Morning. -1.5c/-6.4c W/NW. Dry and cold this morning here with temps unlikely to rise above freezing  according to Fife Weather. Ice day? We are also forecast for some evening snow?

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
