How bad does the weather need to be in order to merit a red warning for lesser populated areas of the Uk? Not being flippant. Just a genuine question.

When we had the snow over Wales in March - our area (near Llangollen) suffered major hit - lots of lambs/sheep casualties. It is seemingly just down to human population numbers/impact on travelling etc., quite a few farmers I think have joined the welsh forum - at least you can share info/anecdotal evidence in real time!

Well that very heavy hail shower temporarily turned everything white. Temperature fell from +5.3C to +3.4C (-1.3C/hr) and there was the strongest gust of the day here of 26 mph (height 2 metres in a built up area).

Shower appearing from behind the hill now. Wonder what that'll drop?  3.3c/-1.1c.

Still blustery here with frequent snow showers. Nothing actually lying yet but with the temp now down to 1C (dewpoint -1.0C) surely it can't be long before it does.

Anyway, if red warning was down to population density and potential disruption then surely at least the central belt should have had one. All bridges closed at one point, rail network shut down, roads blocked with trees and blown over lorries, if that isn't disruption what is? Personally though I don't think population density should come into it, it should just be down to the severity of the weather itself. If that only affects half a dozen people then so what, it makes it no less severe for them does it?

Snow has started here in Thornton, Fife. Very blustery but the worst of the gales seem to have passed.

Clear blue skies, light breeze, bright sunshine. Fast-developing massive low barrelling through where??

I'd give it another 10 mins before it hits Edinbugh!

Hang on, where did that come from?(Seriously, since typing my previous post, a load of dirty-white streaks of cloud have appeared to the north and east (can't see the west from here, but south looks blue still); it's still sunny' but the wind is getting back up again )

It's snowing in Northeast Fife apparently so I'd imagine it'll be the same when it reaches you. Was on a night out yesterday so I was only briefly awake around 7-8.30 (listened to the cricket before taking an executive decision to suspend brain activities for the morning) but looking at the gust speeds recorded it could've been even worse given what the forecasts were showing yesterday.A red warning was necessary because of the timing alone IMO - any event which shuts down the ENTIRE rail network surely worthy of a take action warning. Had it been in the southeast it would easily have been red but because we have higher average wind speeds and storm frequencies commuters on the motorways or trains are meant to be much better placed to deal with fallen trees on the road or all the trains stopping running.Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing some snow this afternoon and some more persistent stuff tomorrow (although north of the Grampians seem to be taking enough of a pasting now) but more on this later. Just to say for the moment that a stalling front on the edge of a very cold surface layer ( sub 0C at the surface all day tomorrow in central and eastern parts) brings a risk of lying snow for some.

edit: Some horrendous typos in there to the point where bits of it didn't make sense (damned iPhone) Corrected now hopefully

Looks like the eastern half of the country may get something from these huges blobs of precipitation, (all falling as snow just now north of dundee, more  sleety mix further south) however the cold air is travelling south at a fair rate of knots so won't be too long before all precipitation is snow. Check out the radar. Aviemore seems to be taking a pounding at the moment.

I was not expecting this as the forecast was for it to be further north but we are having some 'robust' snowy, sleety showers at the moment and its getting colder all the time. By the looks of the radar we could be in for some quite heavy showers through the afternoon.

Met Office haven't updated their warnings which is odd, usually done just after 11am. More heavy snow showers here btw. Schools that remain open are closing shortly.
