Early snow warning out for Durham and Northumberland on Friday

Issued at: 1126 on Tue 28 Jan 2014

Valid from: 0800 on Fri 31 Jan 2014

Valid to: 2100 on Fri 31 Jan 2014

A band of heavy rain, reaching the west coast of Scotland early on Friday morning, will spread eastwards across the rest of Scotland during the day, with the rain turning increasingly to snow as it moves eastwards. Snow will fall to low levels for a time but may tend to revert to rain there, a concern in its own right. At higher levels, the snow combined with gales is expected to give some very poor traveling conditions. The public should be aware of the likelihood of a spell of disruptive wintry weather, with impacts to travel and perhaps also to power supplies.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

As another deep area of low pressure moves in from the Atlantic on Friday, it will bring heavy rain and gale force winds to much of the UK. Cold air, imported from the continent on easterly winds, will be slow to give ground across northern Britain, and so the heavy rain will turn to snow as it moves eastwards, especially on high ground where further large accumulations are likely. At lower levels in central and eastern Scotland, heavy rainfall may well turn out to be the bigger concern. The snow and heavy rain will also be accompanied by gale force winds, which may lead to localised disruption due to coastal flooding.

Shame the flow is going to be so weak on Thursday,

Uppers and DAM look conducive for the S word, but fairly useless without any precip.

Today's easterly isn't bringing much precipitation to our region instead its just lots of cloud and suppressed temperatures

Rainfall over the next 8 days looks relatively low for the NE compared to the south west where they badly need some drier weather

The NMM hi-res model from Meteociel seems quite keen for some snow for the region

tomorrow (higher ground favoured as always).

Never used these charts before, although they are very high resolution,so be interesting

to see the outcome.

There was just a hint of sleet here at first, it did warm a bit again before it started. There's been 5.6mm so far, not a lot - but seems worse due to wind.At least two hours more though.

At last we have seen snow today! First snowflakes of the season. The power of evaporative cooling with a clear marked snowline at around 100m. A slushy couple of cms cover, but it will do...

Could be a very icy night tonight, not expecting temps to recover much now - currently 2 degrees and there is a chance of further snow overnight and snow showers down to lower levels.

Its great to see a white coating on the ground - although it is a real slush fest. The fells will be getting a real pasting.

Dunmail Raise at 250m and Kirkstone Pass are both closed for the first time this season.  Kirkstone Pass in an average winter would have been closed a few times by now..

Central Lakes has hit the snow jackpot today... snowiest part of England.

Still a slushy covering outside here.

At 41 I've seen a few decent winters.

As much as I'm a cold/snowy/extreme weather fan, this winter is starting to choke my chain now.

It is monotonous, boring and more often than not wet and windy.

I'll be honest, I'll take a Bartlett right now.

I want some longevity dry, not the endless wetness.

All my love. X

Today is Candlemas Day and folklore suggests "if its fair and bright winter will have another fight". For the uninitiated Candlemas Day is the Christian commemoration of the presentation of Jesus in the Temple at Jerusalem and the purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary as ordained in the Jewish Law (Torah) by Yahweh the God of Israel in Leviticus 12.

It is known in the States as Groundhog Day and Punxsutawney Phil has indeed popped out of his burrow this Sunday morning, predicting six more weeks of Winter - ie. rain and gales!

http://www.usatoday....y-phil/5101379/

Today we are halfway between the Winter Solstice and the Vernal Equinox ie. Midwinter. It also coincides with Imbolic the ancient Pagan Festival.

If Candlemas Day be fair and bright
Winter will have another fight.
If Candlemas Day brings cloud and rain,
Winter won't come again.

If Candlemas Day be dry and fair,
The half o the winter's to come and mair;
If Candlemas Day be wet and foul,
The half o the winter's gane at Yule.

I don't think the NE will have a bad week, even Wednesday will be much less wet than Friday. It's very noticeable that now even one dry and breezy day makes quite a difference, for example yesterday the roads were mainly dry apart from all the places where the Highways no longer bother to maintain the drainage and it streams over the surface, breaking it up.

As expected a fairly sunny day is on the cards today though some cloudy periods do look likely at times before wet and windy weather sweeps across the region tomorrow then sunny spells return again on Thursday
