It was funny here, it stayed just above freezing all night but as the sun was rising we suddenly dropped to -0.6C

The wind did drop out about 7am although that isn't the explanation many days when this effect is noticed.

nice frosty morning overnight low of -0.6c, looking at the current gfs current 6z run our region could see some snow at times with -4/-5 uppers over us as the battle between the air masses continues

Fog warning out for the southern half of the region for this evening

Issued at: 1141 on Mon 20 Jan 2014

Valid from: 1700 on Mon 20 Jan 2014

Valid to: 2345 on Mon 20 Jan 2014

Fog patches may reform later on Monday afternoon, perhaps becoming locally dense by Monday evening. The public should be aware of the potential for difficult driving conditions.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

Fog patches, having mostly cleared during Monday, are likely to reform quickly in places during the evening. Not everywhere in the yellow area will see fog, but where it does form it may be dense, bringing visibility below 200 metres.

Covers

Durham, Darlington, Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough

lol just saw that one

Issued at: 1154 on Mon 20 Jan 2014

Valid from: 0015 on Tue 21 Jan 2014

Valid to: 1200 on Tue 21 Jan 2014

Patchy fog will form in places through Monday evening, perhaps becoming more widespread overnight and into Tuesday morning. The public should be aware of the potential for difficult driving conditions and some travel disruption.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

Fog patches will affect some parts of the yellow area as early as Monday evening. However, there is potential for fog to become more widespread overnight and into Tuesday morning. Some places within the yellow area will not see fog, but where it forms it could be locally dense with visibility falling below 200 metres. The fog may be slow to clear on Tuesday in some places, especially across the east of the warning area.

Covers

Durham, Darlington, Northumberland, Gateshead, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Newcastle upon Tyne, Redcar and Cleveland, South Tyneside, Stockton-on-Tees, Sunderland

UK wide early warning for heavy rain out for Sunday

Issued at: 1218 on Wed 22 Jan 2014

Valid from: 0600 on Sun 26 Jan 2014

Valid to: 2345 on Sun 26 Jan 2014

Another spell of wet and very windy weather will cross the UK from the west during Sunday. Heavy rain and gales are likely to affect most areas for a time with further flooding possible in prone areas, particularly southern parts of England and Wales where the ground remains saturated following earlier rain. The public should be aware of the possible disruption to transport and the continuing risk of flooding in prone areas.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

Another Atlantic frontal system is forecast to cross the UK during Sunday. Most areas will see a period of heavy rain and very strong winds, perhaps also some snow for a time over northern hills. Rainfall accumulations of 15 to 25mm are expected quite widely with 35mm or more locally, especially over southern parts of England and Wales. Expect southerly gusts 40 to 50 mph quite widely, particularly with the passage of the front, and probably peaking 60 to 70 mph or more around exposed coasts and headlands.

There is still some considerable uncertainty in the details of this system and this warning will be updated in the coming days.

Good to see the fells pasted in the white stuff this morning with a general cover down to about 450-500m. Further snow showers this afternoon have helped to bring a decent cover. The next few days will bring much more snow to the fells. So after a snow-starved couple of months, things are looking up for those who like messing around in the snow on the hills.

Late January - mid Feb usually sees the fells in there most winter splendour..

well looking at the radar i can see us staying dry all day that low has been fizzled out by the high pressure to our east, is it stronger and further west than was predicted, thats the only conclusion i can think off

Yep heaviest rain has thankfully missed the south and gone into France the somerset levels have only had around 5mm so far of course no rain is welcome there now given the severe situation down there but its better what was originally forecast

The wind has certainly picked up in the last half an hour as the front passes through. a lovely squall line is developing from the west coast of wales to the lakes and then again in northumberland
