Turned to snow here quite quickly and has left a dusting on the grass, now stopped.

Looks like it could be our turn for severe gales on Friday.

2 warnings out for Friday from the Met office

Issued at: 1101 on Wed 25 Dec 2013

Valid from: 0005 on Fri 27 Dec 2013

Valid to: 2100 on Fri 27 Dec 2013

Widespread gales are expected to develop late during Thursday night or Friday night bringing gusts of over 50 or 60 mph inland and gusts to 70 or 80 mph to some coastal areas and high ground. The public should be aware of the potential for disruption, especially where the high winds are combined with heavy rainfall. Please watch for updates to this warning over the coming days, especially those who have travel plans.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

Another deep area of low pressure developing over the Atlantic Ocean will bring another spell of wet and windy weather across the UK as it tracks northeastwards past northwestern Britain later on Thursday and during Friday. Wind is expected to increase across the area during Thursday evening and night. Peak winds are thought most likely to occur during the early hours of Friday and Friday morning with the highest gusts probably being over Irish Sea coastal areas. Relative to recent storms that have affected the UK, Friday's depression is looking less intense and the extent of associated impacts are currently thought to be less severe. However, at this stage there remain some uncertainties concerning the track and depth of this storm and this warning will be re-assessed and updated on Boxing Day.

Covers

Darlington, Durham, Gateshead, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, Northumberland, Redcar and Cleveland, South Tyneside, Stockton-on-Tees, Sunderland

Yellow warning for heavy rain has also had an update

Issued at: 1111 on Wed 25 Dec 2013

Valid from: 0005 on Fri 27 Dec 2013

Valid to: 2100 on Fri 27 Dec 2013

Spells of rain affecting the UK late Thursday and Friday are expected to be heavy at times with 10 to 20 mm expected to fall quite widely. Locally in excess of 30 mm is likely over parts of Wales, Northern Ireland and southern England by mid-morning whilst more than 40 mm are expected over parts of Scotland and northern England. The public should be aware of the potential for disruption, especially where ground is already saturated and where high winds are combined with heavy rainfall. Please watch for updates to this warning over the coming days, especially those who have travel plans.

However, at this stage there remain some uncertainties concerning the track and depth of this storm and this warning will be re-assessed and updated on Boxing Day. Over Scotland precipitation is likely to start off as snow in places with some brief accumulations above 200-300 m and remain as snow above 600 m or so in the Highlands. Meanwhile, below approximately 600 m snowmelt will increase the contribution to Scottish river catchments.

Well well well, it's bloody cold out there. Thick blanket of frost covered the cars and pavements this morning. Went to the Boxing Day sales and when I came back to car at around 9.30 the car was iced up again!

Air temps don't seem that low and in fact many places have stayed just above freezing - but ground has really gone down low under fairly clear skies overnight and patchy fog or at least damp air has caused a lot of hoar.

Amber warning for strong winds

Issued at: 1211 on Thu 26 Dec 2013

Valid from: 0600 on Fri 27 Dec 2013

Valid to: 1800 on Fri 27 Dec 2013

Widespread gales are likely to develop across the area late on Thursday evening and last much of Friday. The worst of the winds are likely to transfer across northwest Wales and much of northern England during the day on Friday bringing gusts of 60 to 70 mph widely with locally 80 mph gusts affecting west coasts and high ground for a time. The public should be prepared for disruption to transport and power supplies.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

Another deep area of low pressure now developing over the Atlantic will bring another spell of very windy weather across the UK as it tracks northeastwards, crossing northern Scotland during the second half of Friday. To the south of the low pressure centre, a swathe of severe gales is likely to cross northwest Wales and much of northern England. The worst of the winds should ease on Friday evening.

Areas affected

Darlington, Durham, Gateshead, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, Northumberland, Redcar and Cleveland, South Tyneside, Stockton-on-Tees, Sunderland

I'm sheltered, especially from SW winds, but, even so, although it sounds rough, the gusts have only been to about 35mph here so far. Have had worse in recent years. Due to get worse later, though.

Been a very windy day today, but the thing that's surprised me is the persistence of the rain

which has never let up all day.
