North east England remains one of 3 regions for the UK which is warning free, thats not to say it won't be wet and or windy it just means the winds won't be as strong as some other areas

Does anyone have the URL for that Pennine cam is it Nenthead or somewhere? Here there's a dusting of snow higher up from showers late yesterday but starting as rain on 3.4C now.

Might cool for a while as it gets heavier.

Tomorrows warning for the NE

Issued at: 1125 on Mon 23 Dec 2013

Valid from: 0200 on Tue 24 Dec 2013

Valid to: 2359 on Tue 24 Dec 2013

A rapidly deepening area of low pressure will bring very strong winds to Northern Ireland, Scotland, north Wales and northern England during Tuesday. There is the likelihood of widespread gales, with gusts 65-75 mph. Gusts of 80-90 mph are possible, the greatest risk being towards the northwest where there will also be frequent wintry showers. The public should be aware of the potential for significant disruption to travel due to the very strong winds. This is an update to the Alert issued on Sunday to extend the area further south. Please monitor for further updates.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

An area of low pressure will deepen rapidly as it passes just to the west and northwest of the UK on Tuesday, ending up as an exceptionally deep feature. This will bring severe gales to northern and some central parts of the UK during Tuesday.

Early wind warning out for Friday

Issued at: 1329 on Mon 23 Dec 2013

Valid from: 0005 on Fri 27 Dec 2013

Valid to: 2359 on Fri 27 Dec 2013

Another spell of stormy weather is expected to affect many areas, winds increasing later on Boxing Day but likely to peak during Friday. Gusts of 70-80 mph are possible especially in exposed parts of the west and south. Spells of heavy rain can also be expected, including areas that remain saturated from rainfall earlier in the week. The public should be aware of the potential for disruption, especially where the high winds are combined with heavy rainfall. Please watch for updates to this warning over the coming days, especially those who have travel plans.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

Another exceptionally deep area of low pressure is expected to develop over the eastern Atlantic later on Thursday and track northeastwards close to western Britain through Friday. Associated strengthening winds are expected to increase to gale force in many areas and severe gale at times especially over exposed coasts and hills. Bands of heavy rain are also expected to affect many areas but particularly in the south and west, where a further 30 to 50 mm may fall. At this stage there is still some uncertainty over the detail and this warning will be updated in the coming days.

Fridays wind warning for the NE has gone now following today's update from the met office, instead a few parts of the region have a warning for rain

Issued at: 1114 on Tue 24 Dec 2013

Valid from: 0005 on Fri 27 Dec 2013

Valid to: 1800 on Fri 27 Dec 2013

Spells of rain affecting the UK late Thursday and Friday are expected to be heavy at times with 10 to 20 mm expected to fall quite widely. Locally in excess of 30 mm is likely over parts of Wales, Northern Ireland and southern England whilst more than 40 mm are expected locally over Scotland and northern England. The public should be aware of the potential for disruption, especially where ground is already saturated and where high winds are combined with heavy rainfall. Please watch for updates to this warning over the coming days, especially those who have travel plans.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

Another deep area of low pressure is expected to develop over the Atlantic Ocean mid-week, bringing another spell of wet and windy weather across the UK as it tracks northeastwards past northwestern Britain later on Thursday and during Friday. Snowmelt over higher ground in Scotland will increase the contribution to river catchments here. Relative to recent storms that have affected the UK, Friday's depression is looking less intense and the extent of associated impacts are currently thought to be less widespread and less severe. However, at this stage there remain some uncertainties concerning the track and depth of this storm and this warning will be re-assessed and updated over the coming days.

Today's wind warning is now only in force for the northern half of the region following an update this morning

Issued at: 1029 on Tue 24 Dec 2013

Valid from: 0200 on Tue 24 Dec 2013

Valid to: 2359 on Tue 24 Dec 2013

An area of low pressure will bring strong winds to the area today. There is the likelihood of widespread gales, with gusts of 50's of mph inland and 65-75 mph on some coasts and hills. The public should be aware of the potential for disruption to travel.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

An exceptionally deep low pressure system is passing to the northwest of the UK today bringing strong winds to many areas. However, the extent and strength of these is less than previously anticipated, and the area of the warning has been reduced. Winds will generally come down across England, Wales and Northern Ireland this afternoon, but not till later in the evening over much of Scotland.

Definitely not as windy today as they warned, in fact it's not a bad day at all, with long sunny spells about 4C.There's a patch of precipitation moves through in the early hours which may give many places a 'technical' white Christmas with some flakes falling.
