I agree, a really poor analogy. So what analogy would you use to compare people who wish for death and destruction during a weather event?

No one is wishing for death and destruction. Just looking forward to viewing what nature throws our way.

Seven Stones dropped 3mb in the last hour.

I doubt that, perhaps you mean it has dropped 3mb in the last 3 hours. The barometric tendency is over 3 hours not one?

The far SW=Scilly Isels area is showing falls of 6.4mb per 3 hours so 2mb is about what I would expect anywhere to show. I apologise if you have later data that show a 3mb drop in 1 hour. That would indicate a fairly rapid deepening of the low.

Heavy Rain falling here, a very windy afternoon earlier, since become calmer, though sure that will change as we progress through the evening!

Will there be any lightning associated with this 'storm'? Or do we need different ingredients for lightning to occur...

This system is unlikely to cause lightning. Though i'm sure one of the convective experts will enlighten with more information on why not?

Different ingredients realistically, you need negative lifted values to stand a chance and preferably -4 with high end cape values for really good thunder and lightening.

Not sure anyone on this forum wishes for the above, although the anology would be "psycho"

Quite incredible what I am watching on Sky News. Unbelievable. This is the most over hyped weather event I have ever seen. It could do untold damage to the reputation of meteorological institutions. This is really not even a storm. Any level headed forecaster can see this, just take a look at the charts in an unbiased manner. A brief windy interlude with heavy rain is what it is. Very windy along souther coasts.

you really are enjoying yourself

my apologies re the town in any avatar

995.1  was reported at 7pm

992.3  was reported at 8pm

So 2.8mb, I just rounded it up to 3.

Looks like everybody is getting the 'calm before the storm' as it were...

Calm down folks im sure the wind will pick up later!

*crosses fingers*

I don't think it's dropped here, seems tobe picking up more if anything, Dover Kent.

I think the low is around Buoy 62029 winds now up to 34 mph misread the scale last time thinking was meters per second..

Hi the Pit , this buoy off Cornwall has the pressure as falling rapidly...http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=62107Oh my look at the graph it is falling rapidly..http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/show_plot.php?station=62107&meas=pres&uom=E&time_diff=0&time_label=GMT Edited by Polar Bear

Quite fun this trying to spot the low via buoy data.

To me and how I image things in my head, the slackening/calming of winds is more likely to mean the system is developing more rather than not so much. It's hard to explain, but if the winds were staying more constant from the same direction as today it would seem that the low to the north was having more influence, and the developing low to the SW having less influence, with it likely to be drawn eastwards quicker as a less developed system and therefore further south.

However if winds are falling calm and backing ahead of the incoming low, it may be having more influence and 'attracting' the air ahead of it more as it moves in/develops, hence the wind stops flowing into the low to the north and gets closer to the low to the SW (low moving faster than the light winds ahead)

Not sure if that makes much sense and can't tell if that's likely to be how it working this time without more live data or until later tonight though.

I suspect this type of thing and the slack wind/pressure field ahead of the low could have in part given rise to that phrase 'the calm before the storm'
