No trains up to London until midday at the earliest. I walked down to the railway station this morning. Quite a lot of branches down including some on Lawn Lane. A large willow tree down by the river. The last I heard Parkway ( a dual carriageway that runs through the City) is still closed as part of the Premier Inn (can only be 3 or 4 years old) roof has come off and insulation blowing around.Currently working in my company's Chelmsford office but hope to travel up to my office in Euston this pm. Kind Regards Dave

Sounds a like things are a little worse nearer the city centre. Good luck on getting to Euston.

Heavy rain and high winds across central and southern England and Wales are affecting train services on Monday 28 October.

This may mean that some trains are delayed or cancelled, and some Train Operators are running amended timetables.

Road conditions are also expected to be hazardous, so please allow extra time to reach the station and allow extra time for connecting trains.

Weird, we're only a couple of miles up the road and there are several trees down round here (thankfully none onto cars or houses).

 

Also the line appears still to be blocked due to a tree down at Sole St.

That's really sad. I can totally understand because I have this beautiful ash tree outside my window and I was scared I was going to lose it. There is also a 40 foot conifir thing at the back I was scared of losing as well but that was because of its size not its beauty !!

Well out transport network has been wiped out, sirens have been nearly constant (and I only live in a small town), fences are down and a big wall collapsed in our High Street.  Nothing extreme you say.

Yes, we had about an hour of quite violent winds here, centred around 7:30. Lost power for a while.Here are a couple of pictures I took at the time in the village. They are not great quality, as one was taken out of a car and the other one was taken in a precarious situation, so I wasn't thinking about composition! The one with the tree on the power lines actually happened while I was there, although I was looking elsewhere. There was a sharp crack and the wind was roaring in the trees. It was pretty frightening and I was watching all the large trees, in case they fell or dropped a large branch. I'm glad it was quite short lived! Edited October 28, 2013 by Steve C

Medway area had wind from west and not as strong as further east and south east where the wind was south west, the local geography of medway worked against you with this storm.

Apart from a bout of strong winds between 6 and 8 this morning which did actually wake me up, it was nothing out of the ordinary here. Plenty of rain though!

Really calmed down now here in Whitstable, the sea now has no white horses at all and the conditions are 200% better than 3 hours ago, you could look out the window and not even realise the damage that has been caused in the county. A really fast moving storm. Have a friend in Denmark who said they are on real alert, all bridges are closed already and public transport being stopped they are expecting to be hit bad.

Its annoying me on FB that so many people are saying, its nothing compared to 1987, they forget that this time around, we have the technology to predict weather further ahead, we were all able to get prepared yesterday, we moved things, we brought pets indoors, we "battened down the hatches", 1987 was out the blue and was a shock to us all, where as last night we all sat waiting patiently.  A 17yr old girl has died after a tree fell on the caravan she was sleeping in, a 14 yr old boy has died in the rough sea, 2 deaths, numerous trees fallen, fences ripped off, tiles missing from roofs - to me its just as bad as 1987 because theres been death and destruction!!!!

 

Looking out my windows the sun is now shining, its still a bit blowy, but everything is still intact, thankfully.

 

Anyway guys n girls, thank you for the updates yesterday, will see you no doubt soon for some of that white stuff

Few trees down in Epsom/Sutton area but other that nothing too horrendous ....just wondering if a storm will ever seem as bad again after the '87 storm tho??!!

I see Andrewsfield, inland in Essex, had a 79 mph gust, which is impressive. It was definitely the worst wind here since at least 2002. I can't believe I suffered no damage! I was expecting fence panel issues.

Been out for a walk now round the Bexley area, and hardly any signs of damage, just some moderately sized branches broken off trees.

Same here, couldn't see much damage when I walked into town this morning. Couldn't believe how quick the big gusts just disappeared. Glad they have though, peaked at 82 wow.

Well it was never forecast to be another (or even near) 1987 and I don't really think people want that amount of devastation or disruption. All in all most agencies and models got this about right for intensity and location, it was just the timing that was a little uncertain but thankfully it hit while most people were tucked away inside. 

 

It just about 'met' all my expectations and it sounds like not too much damage was caused to property and only a couple of incidents relating to human life - which is still two too many.

Compared to the Storm on October 27th 2002, this is nothing.  Just been trawling through the past metars. Maximum gust today was Gust 51knots, in 2002 it was Gust 64knots. But if you look it was very consistently windy on October 27th 2002.
