What do you think will will be the coldest temperature recorded this Winter, and where?

 

I'm going to go for -12.3 in Braemar, Scotland.

lowest in my location will be well below -10 but the actual recorded will be slightly below -10, in Dec 2010 -15 was recorded officially but it got below -20c

In the uk 17th Jan (see my winter forecast) after the snow storms have passed and we have clear skies

MINUS 33.8c on the sea front at weston super mare February 8th 2014 .i will send you pictures of the Ice breakers out at sea ,but i think if somewhere in england can get below Minus 20c there could be some happy people about ,as this would likely occur with snowfall on the ground .

I don't expect long sustained cold but -17 somewhere in Scotland quite possible mid-Jan after snow cover develops briefly.

15.0C on 12 December 1994, Hawarden airport, Wales. That is actually warmer than the highest March minima of 14.2C and not far off the April one at 15.2C!

 

January's is 13.0C on the 20th in 2008, St James Park, London.

 

February's is 13.7C on the 13th in 1998...in ABOYNE, of all places!

 

Interestingly, each winter month is represented by a different UK country.

I'm not buying this mild winter malarkey as I'm still awaiting a cold spell from the previous two which never happened IMBY. So with that and the fact that the GLOSEA model predicts an average winter at best, I'm going for -20c somewhere in the Highlands with numerous others being well below zero both by day and night.

It's amazing how a typical Atlantic-driven spell in a historically Atlantic dominated month has generated so much pessimism regarding the upcoming winter.

Indeed MarchBlizzard. -25 easily achievable in the glens, but will it be recorded? In 09 and 10, IMBY, temps got down to around -15. And i'm 30 miles south of Glasgow.

In Jan 2010 temps flirted with -18C, and that was just 8 miles south of Manchester!

 

Despite the overall persistence of cold spells over the last few years there has been a lack of "serious" cold within them, for example, -25C and below. I think we hit -22 point something celcius in 09/10? Don't get me wrong, that's cold but far from challenging the overall records.

Indeed, if the charts are still showing a similar set up come January then maybe then will be the time to start worrying.

It's no secret that the lack of weather stations in the Highlands means many of the lowest temps go unrecorded (there's a body of opinion that states that -30'c has likely been breached numerous times) however I'm going to say -22'c at Dalwhinnie.

And there's not a hope in hell that somewhere in the Highlands won't record at least -10'c, that would be very unusual.

This October has generated pessimism, nothing to do with it.  Wait til we endure the second half Nov

But being realistic, double digit minuses in Highland Glens is almost a given.
