Can honestly say I have never seen this (Oarfish) before.  According to the BBC news article, an ancient Japanese myth says sightings of these fish precede Earthquakes.

I'm beginning to wonder with the recent Yeti confirmation if this fish could be a reasonable explanation for sightings such as 'Nessie' and the lake Manitoba creature.

I'd prefer it to be called a Polar bear/Bear cross. As for the Loch Ness legend, that one was cracked a long time ago. It's to do with water currents in the Loch, it only happens in a few places in the world, Canada being one of them (It might be the lake Manitoba one)

I watched a documentary a few months back about this creature and there are theories that this may indeed be the case.  It also linked this creature with being the basis of the many seafaring myths of other types of sea monsters (sea serpents) and also of the far eastern legends of dragons.
