Climate scientists wrangle over crucial projections on likely effects of global warming just hours before report's deadline

 

Fraught negotiations over a landmark review of the world's knowledge of climate change were making slow progress on Thursday with just hours to go before early Friday's deadline .

The negotiations are likely to go on through the night, as countries and scientists wrangle over how to assess the global threat from greenhouse gas emissions.

At stake are projections – such as those of future temperature increases, sea level rises and the frequency of extreme weather – that will inform and guide government policies around the world for years to come

Of course but not just politically-motivated ,I'm sure we will see 10,000 forums and 1,000,000 comments by year end with the 'loudest' posts coming from those who haven't left their living room in the last 10 years

 

The  scientist will of course  get on with doing the real research largely in the field.

Very interesting what the IPPC report says, with so called GW stalled as the majority now  believe with Arctic and Antarctic in good health they need new scare tactics so they can justify their funding(as no doubt the new chairman a trained accountant will tell them)  The report will  change tact ocean acidification the new danger to mankind, linked to there favorite subject the so called devilish  CO2.

That's a tad optimistic Stew, I fully expect hysteria to reach fever pitch by Saturday. Not to forget this is just the first part.

It will say Global warming is continuing albeit at a slower rate. Man made climate. Give a few dates for human disaster. It can't report anything else otherwise they'd be  a lot of scientists out of work and research money transferred elsewhere.

IPCC climate report: Scientist's worry ahead of release

 

The latest update on the state of the world's climate will be released on Friday in Stockholm, Sweden.

 

Scientists and government officials from 195 countries have been meeting all week ahead of the publication from the UN-sponsored Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The report will detail the physical evidence behind global warming. The final wording of the summary for policymakers has now been approved, according to the IPCC's vice-chair. Delegates were discussing the final wording late into the night on Thursday.

 

Drafts of this dense, complex document seen by the BBC indicate that scientists are more convinced than ever that the planet is warming and that humans are responsible for the majority of it, especially over the past 50 years. This message is likely to be backed up by improved observations of changes in polar ice, sea level and temperature.

 

However, some projections of future temperature rise are likely to be lowered from the previous IPCC report in 2007. This is because of a hiatus, or pause, in warming that has occurred since 1998. Nonetheless, Prof Jean Pascal van Ypersele, the vice-chairman of the IPCC, emphasised that the panel's statements were robust, and raised the concern that the target of staying below a 2 degrees Celsius rise in global temperatures was becoming increasingly difficult to attain. "Any reasonable scientist has to be more worried if they have to answer the question of how to stabilise climate to a level of warming that is not considered dangerous by policymakers," he told BBC News.

 

Politicians took a decision in 2009 at the Copenhagen climate conference to try to limit long-term global average temperature increases to 2C. This, it was said, was the point above which dangerous changes to the planet would occur. Prof van Ypersele said the world passed a significant milestone on the road to a 2C rise when the concentration in the atmosphere of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide went through the 400 parts per million mark last May. "That number is a measure of the duvet we have around the Earth. As long as its thickness is increasing, I don't see how we can't be worried that it will become more and more difficult to achieve any stabilisation target," he said.

 

Taking place in a former brewery, the talks were said to be making slow progress but delegates expressed optimism that the summary document would be published on time on Friday. There have been long discussions at the meeting about the impact of the pause in temperature rises over the past 15 years, with reports of some governments attempting to play down this hiatus. One delegate told me the language was being clarified but that "nothing is being hidden under the carpet". Much of the time has been taken up with making the summary easier to understand. Another delegate said that there was a great focus on avoiding misinterpretation: "It still won't be a text my mother would read and happily understand," this delegate said. "But it will be more clear than when we came here.

Regarding the MWP

Continental-scale surface temperature reconstructions show, with high confidence, multidecadal

periods during the Medieval Climate Anomaly (year 950 to 1250) that were in some

regions as warm as in the late 20th century. These regional warm periods did not occur as

coherently across regions as the warming in the late 20th century

Well that was a surprise, they try to put the blame on no warming on a change on ocean currents but neglect to tell the public that prior to this change these same currents contributed to warming of the planet. A famous quote from a President Lincoln springs to mind.

The doubts - the statistical uncertainty - have always been clearly stated/shown, in graphs and graphics?? What happened, once the hacks got involved, who knows?

Today on radio 4 this morning said they have been trying to find ONE skeptical scientist in Britain qualified to speak on the report but found no-one . Are any of the vociferous skeptics on here scientists qualified to speak on the subject ? If so an opportunity awaits ....
