First time I've had an uneducated guess at one of these so I'll go with 10.0c. I expect a mildish start but progressively becoming cooler and more unsettled. Posted Image

Would love to know what synoptics caused such a low mean in 1740 - indeed 1740 saw a record cold winter... was there a major volcanic eruption which affected things that year??????????

What a strange year regarding temperatures 1740 was, after the bone chilling start September was rather mild with a cet of 14.0 only to followed with an October cet of 5.3.As you say DM the synoptic charts for that year would be fascinating.

According to this, "winter 1739-40 was merely the second in a series of 6 winters when a strong high pressure developed over Scandinavia.  In several of these years this high extended far enough west to block the usual westerlies over the UK.  In the UK and Ireland, the period was generally dry as well as cold."

Apologies for taking this off topic somewhat but thought this was an interesting article - I'll have a stab at the October CET nearer the time (not that this is likely to mean I'm more accurate :) )

After days of torturous method-analysis, I've decided to guess (preliminarily of course) at 10.7.Posted Image

I'm expecting quite a mixed month ahead - similiar to September in many respects but with the coldest weather reserved for the latter part as opposed to the middle part as has occured this month.

It looks like a very mild start but there are signs temps will recover to more normal values as we move into the second week.

There could be a milder spell just after mid month but mild days may well be cancelled out by chilly nights.

I'm going for 10.9 degrees - another near average month but masking the fact we will see some very mild weather early on and a possible quite cold end.

Sunshine wise - above average and rainfall wise near average possibly wetter than normal in the SW.

10.8C, mild start, cooling down slowly towards average as the month progresses.

I'm going to go for 12.0C, first 2/3 of the month will be dominated by heights to the east or north East of the UK meaning winds between the South East and South West. Only thing stopping me going higher is the feeling the last week may be when we experience a big pattern change which I feel will set up a cold and possibly pretty wintry November.
