Great North Run: Wet and windy weather forecast

More than 55,000 runners are preparing to take part in the Great North Run with wet and windy weather forecast.

World 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu and England cricketer Graeme Swann are to start the Sunday morning event, which is now in its 33rd year. Forecasters said it would be wet during the run with blustery winds. Thousands in fancy dress will run the 13.1-mile course from Newcastle to South Shields for charity. BBC weather forecaster Jay Wynne said: "It will be quite cold at the start of the race, particularly standing around in the wind.

"There will probably be around 5mm of rain during the race and maybe some heavier bursts. "It will be windy as well and there will probably be gusts of 30-40mph, maybe a little bit higher. "For the main bit of the race down to South Shields the wind should be with them as a cross tail wind and a blustery cross wind when they run along the coast."

Rain coming down heavier now and the wind is picking up which ties in with the radar showing a distinct, but quite narrow band of heavier stuff.

Conditions look good for a squall line to come through in the next hour or so.

I think the Met' Office's 'Autumn Storm' terminology was distinctly over dramatising an unexceptional area of low pressure which brought a fairly windy day with a bit of rain in the afternoon. Perhaps you had to be in the north west Highlands or the Lake District!

Anyway, here the morning was mainly dry, breezy and cloudy and the afternoon was breezy, very briefly quite windy, with a spell of mainly light rain and drizzle which eventually cleared to the east around 1700 g.m.t.

At 1800 g.m.t;

Temp; 9.9c

Max' today; 13.0c

Min' last night; 4.7c

Grass min; 2.4c

Rainfall from 0800-1800 g.m.t; 3.3 mm

Sunshine today; 0.06 hrs

Mean wind speed; 24 mph W

Highest gust today; 51 mph SW at 1451 g.m.t

 Confirmed - if today was wet/windy/stormy etc, I'd hate to see a fine day.

I take it you weren't impressed then. The gfs 12oz did show it to be a lot stronger than it was however this morning the lack of activity on XCweather gave a strong hint that it wasn't really going to be an event.
