"WINTER’S first snow has fallen in Scotland.

And forecasters are warning of a nasty cold snap, complete with gales, next week.

But there’s no need to batten down the hatches yet, or find the shovel for the drive.

So far, it’s only snowed near the summit of Cairn Gorm and any falls in the next few days should only happen above 500 metres.

And after the chilly spell, set to last from Sunday to Thursday, we’re being promised fine, settled weather all the way into October.

First, the bad news. Met Office forecaster Lindsay Mears said yesterday: “Low pressure from Iceland means cloud, rain and strong winds will move south across all areas from Sunday, with severe gales a risk in the north of the UK.

“It will be cool, with chilly nights and further spells of rain in midweek, with wintry showers and snow possible down to 500m in Scotland.â€

Weather Channel forecaster Leon Brown added: “A cold plunge is expected to sink south, with the first dusting of snow on Scottish mountain tops.â€

But every cloud has a silver lining. Lindsay went on: “It looks settled later in September, with more settled weather across many parts during the last week or so of the month.

“It will also probably be quite settled into October, with temperatures close to or a little above average and feeling pleasant in sunshine.â€

While most of us are hoping for an Indian summer, bosses at Cairngorm Ski Centre are praying for more of the white stuff.

Operations manager Colin Matthew said: “We’ve had heavy, wet snow near the summit. More would be good, and we hope for an early start to the season. The record earliest start is late October.

“There’s a lot of excitement after such good skiing last winter. We could be looking at a flurry of season ticket sales.â€

This is utter rubbish from the Daily Record and all the other media sources that copied each other. There has been no snow on the hills of Scotland, let alone in the quantities that the misleading picture shows. It's just another badly reported non-event.

Rest assured, the only place to get up-to-date news on snow falling in Scotland is my Twitter feed! @theiaincameron

I'm assuming that what actually has occurred is that for a very brief period during the night, it was cold enough for some slushy type sleet to fall from the skies near the summit of Cairngorm Mt.

First sign of quite cooler and unsettled weather and one media source had to go and report snow.. Yes a chance of wintry over the high ground next week, though briefly andnothing substantial. Scaremongering, i thought the daily express would be first one to do it this winter, plenty of time yet!!

Theres no reason why snow wont fall over the highest ground of the Scottish mountains early next week. If  this chart verifies, which is the 925 mb chart  temps at 2,500 ft, many of the mountains of Scotland are above 4,000 ft, so  snow looks likely over the tops....Posted Image Posted ImagePosted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image

The current MWIS forecast suggests the possibility of snow from Sunday evening onwards:

"...mixture of constant rain and heavy squally showers, of hail & snow on Scottish Munros, where freezing level will drop to

and intermittently below 1050m from Sunday night (an unusually lengthy cold period for September). Cloud will

frequently shroud higher areas."

Looks like the temperature will then rise again later next week.

Currently, the temperature on the summit of Cairn Gorm is hovering around 0C.

Unfortunately Vodafone seems to be having a bit of a holiday around Aviemore as far as data is concerned, could not get images out from Mountain Spirit on a dongle yesterday and the Ptarmigan Cam only spat a few images out after mid-morning. Hopefully will come back up OK in the morning with a nice snowy scene!

A nice shot from yesterday of Cairn Gorm from Chris Townsend, no less, from his website http://www.christownsendoutdoors.com/

This might appeal to a few people on here, 'The Cairngorms in Winter' a film by Terry Abraham and Chris Townsend.
