First Air Frost watch autumn 2013

Recommended Posts

The lowest official temperature last night was -2.4 in Kinbrace. N Ireland got close to an air frost, Castlederg recorded 0.4 degrees.

Much attention yesterday was on the heat of the SE, the cold in the Highlands was hardly mentioned.

We will need to rename this thread the first air frost for England and Wales. I was nearly 2 weeks out with my guess for Scotland.

Certainly by late Sept it doesn't take much for sheltered northern spots to record an air frost under clear skies, as I said we saw a widespread one on the 22nd Sept last year.

Actually Redesdale Camp managed to get a frost on 31st August last year.

From a quick look though recent years and England's first frost average date is 27/9.

Shap is probably most likely to get the first frost - average date 1/10 but was 17/9 in 2005 and 2009.

This is followed by Redesdale 8/10, Topcliffe 17/10, then Warcop Range and southern outsider Benson 18/10.

For Wales Sennybridge average is 19/10 but was 18/9 in 2007.

The frost in Scotland was on the early side with Altnaharra average date 25/9 though they had one on 26/8 in 2010. Tulloch Bridge typically gets frost even a week earlier on average 19/9 with one as early as 20/08 in 2007.

-0.3C at Redesdale Camp overnight.

Well that's Scotland and England down. Have Northern Ireland and Wales had any air frosts yet?

No, I don't think so. Castlederg fell to 0.4C on the 6th. Sennybridge fell to 3.2C on the 25th of August but hasn't even fallen below 4C recently.

Ravensworth in North Yorkshire had an hourly reading of 0.4C this morning so may have fallen below freezing too.

Ok thanks, just a matter of time I guess.

With the upcoming cooler spell on the way, thought it right to resurrect this thread - it has been lurking down at the bottom of the third page! - Had hoped there would have been a bit more to discuss on the frost front in recent weeks, but indeed we have had an exceptionally lengthy spell of mild nights with temps barely dropping into single digits for many since the cool interlude in the early-middle of September - a very poor show.

Anyhow looking at the outlook, good chance some places in N England and Scotland in particular who haven't managed at least a ground frost so far this season will do in the coming days.

Wednesday night looks chilly in sheltered NW parts, 2's and 3's should be easily recorded. Thursday evening looks equally chilly in the same spots. However, we might not quite see an air frost.

The upcoming cool spell will do wonders for autumn colours, expect a burst of colour in the coming days as they are tinged.

Hoping to see a bit more activity in this thread in the coming days. My guess of 8 October for first frost here may not be too far out..

Only got under 5c once so far in Autumn!

Hopefully that will change with some cooler airmasses coming over, though I'm hoping it can clear at night for the first ground frost.

Ooh good to see this thread resurrected - its absence in recent weeks indicative of the very mild conditions.

Many places by this time next week should have recorded there first air frost. Indeed it will be interesting to note where hasn't still - possibly the Scilly Islands and cornish coast perhaps...

Indeed from Monday night onwards many northern parts are most likely to see a run of air frosts, with potential for some quite severe ones..

We have had 3 air frosts in the last 10 days. A sign that it has got much colder of late!

Still no air frost here, though Saturday morning came very close and not far out of town the fields were white with frost, so probably an air frost away from the UHI.

-0.5oC around dawn and now the sun is up can see we had a widespread frost, had a few light frosty mornings in the last week but this is the first proper one this season that I have been aware of here.

We had our first air frost of the season this morning with a min temp of -1.1C.

That means in 34 years of records we've had 16 years with the first air frost before this date and 17 years with one after, so very middle of the road!
