Lot's of snow next week in large parts of Siberia. In contrast to last year when there was (end of september) a large are of high pressure in Siberia. So the Snow Advance Index will not start with a very low starting point. We need lots of snow in october.

So we don't really want too much snow in Siberia too soon then?

The risk of snow in northern Scandinavia is increasing as we progress into next week.

Calgary really isn't that snowy.. plus you guys get Chinook winds which help raise the temperatures and melt the snow. St. John's, NL is a place where you would find yourself shoveling snow every other day.

No, but I do see people exaggerating their climate to make it appear better/worse than it actually is. And I do not believe that you have to shovel snow every day in Calgary.

cm why not show the days of falling snow and the normal total snow depth for c to see along with temperature max/min through the winter months, then he can see just what it is like.

Googled Calgary Wx= this link below=seems fairly snowy in winter and very cold and hot in summer, most on Net Wx would love that I suspect?

certainly a lot snowier and in summer much hotter than any part of Leeds

The IMS sea ice extent data (which I think are used on those snow maps) has updated to the 18th, showing an increase in the last 2 days or so.

I had to do that quite a lot in january this year. For me , it was no chore, just a big delight!

Disagree. The Arctic was supposed to be "ice free" by this year. Now the BBC et al. have moved the goal posts by 57 years.

Load of cobblers and spin to protect their pension fund.

It was just 1 study that predicted the possibility of ice free conditions by 2013 and the BBC reported on it, as they should do. The vast majority of studies, and thus the vast majority of BBC reports on them, have predicted ice free conditions closer to the middle of this century.

I'd love snow deep enough for that. I've never had to do it because we have a huge oak tree out the front of the house and it stops the drive getting covered. Should it ever get deep enough (a foot or more) I'll be out shovelling the whole street! Edited by 22nov10blast

Not sure about the whole street, but appreciate the sentiment. Positively excited about the upcoming winter, just a gut feeling.

Open question Is there a link or has anyone looked at Surface Temperature anomalies in NH in October v snow cover ?

October 2012

http://data.giss.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/gistemp/nmaps.cgi?year_last=2013&month_last=8&sat=4&sst=3&type=anoms&mean_gen=10&year1=2012&year2=2012&base1=1951&base2=1980&radius=1200&pol=reg

October 1970-1985

http://data.giss.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/gistemp/nmaps.cgi?year_last=2013&month_last=8&sat=4&sst=3&type=anoms&mean_gen=10&year1=1970&year2=1985&base1=1951&base2=1980&radius=1200&pol=reg

Another big jump in snow cover.
