Kimmirut is almost completely frozen over today. Only yesterday it was open water, there were strong winds and the sea was choppy, it must have frozen over fairly quickly after the wind died as it was -21c.

Anyway, today snowline edging West, some loss in Kazakhstan but overall gains. Hudson Bay starting its annual freeze, and the tongue edges closer to Iceland. :-)

Its getting close to Iceland would be nice to see the bridge form.... Quite an extensive ice gain too in the last 24hrs!

The ice bridge to Iceland would be fascinating to see. Surely you can see the ice coming from the cost of Iceland now

Although they may yesterday's charts these two are of interest, especially given the fact that parts of Poland have had snow within the last 24 hours, it seems.

Firstly cryosphere is back up from its long holiday and then the latest from NOAA.

Nah. Can you see Belgium from the Essex coast? They're similar distances, and ice is on the water's surface rather than being a landmass, so even less visible. And it's not an ice bridge forming there, as in the ice originates from that area, but rather it's rather flowing south from cooler seas and then melting. That's one reason why it won't make any significant progress. Sorry to be a party pooper!

Very surprising to see snow so far south in Texas of all places, so early in the season.

Gstaad-Saanenland on Thursday morning: the snowfall is not yet sufficient to open most ski resorts. Photo: Switzerland Tourism (Webcam)
Snow marks winter's return to Switzerland

Published: 21 Nov 2013 10:53 GMT+01:00

Updated: 21 Nov 2013 10:53 GMT+01:00

Snow hit low-lying areas of Switzerland for the first time this season on Thursday with accumulations of up to five centimetres in the western part of the country and up to 20 centimetres in the mountains.

The wintry conditions led to tailbacks on the A1 and A9 motorways and main roads around Lausanne, according to media reports.

The right lane of the A-1 was blocked for an hour between Winterthur and upper Matzingen in the direction of Saint Gallen on Thursday morning because of an accident in icy conditions, the Blick newspaper reported online.

Zurich is bracing for snow on Friday when more of the white stuff is forecast across the country, except for the valleys of Ticino, MeteoSwiss, the national weather service said.

Up to 15 centimetres is expected in areas of the canton of Zurich at an altitude between 600 and 800 metres.

Actual accumulations will depend on temperatures, which are hovering either side of zero in the valleys and on the plateau.

There is still not enough snow for most of the country’s ski resorts to open, although Switzerland Tourism said seven ski areas were open with limited lift services on Thursday.

At Zermatt, in the canton of Valais, 16 of the area’s 54 lifts were reported operating.

Other resorts with limited operations included Gstaad Mountain Rides (Glacier 3000) in the Bernese Oberland, Engelberg-Titlis and Rigi in Lucerne, and the Graubünden ski centres of Davos, Klosters and Engadin-St. Moritz.

Most ski resorts are not scheduled to start lifts running until the end of the month or in December.

However, Verbier in the canton of Valais announced it will open this weekend with a limited number of runs open, while Crans-Montana, also in Valais, is scheduled to start its season on Saturday.

I don't think it is a poor beginnings for winter in Switzerland - most resorts don't open until December anyway!

It is bring hailed as an excellent start on the alps discussion thread... Certainly, if there's snow in interlaken, which is relatively low lying, then that's good news! :)

Oh that is good news then...I will check out the "Alps discussion thread" too as the subject is of interest! I have relatives and brother living in canton St.Gallen (NE) whom have expressed a different opinion however... I do too remember snow in Zurich and in the lowlands in early November in the late 90s...this juncture in the year is not unusual...but its early days as you imply to judge a seasons worth. !

Only a couple of pixels away now

A bit worrying - will polar bears start raiding the bins in Iceland if the ice sheet makes contact? LoL

That image transports me to the 1980s and swapping computer game cassettes with your mates. If only we could find the right hex address for the POKE we could send those pixels to Iceland.

The USA looks highly likely to get a properly EPIC start to winter, going by those images.

Plenty of snow coming to Finland in the coming days, this forecast courtesy of Helsinki and then the ensembles for the same location.

Some serious scatter there and quite early on in the run, but I think the trend will be our friend.

Likewise, Moscow's forecast continues to be a thing of beauty and some decent ensembles being produced too.

The early signs are that December 2013 is shaping up to be good one over in Europe right now, just whether we become entrenched in some of that cold remains to be seen.
