Thanks bobby.

Links really useful. Had this all bookmaked on old phone!

Interesting model there cheese. Unfortunately it does seem the models are beginning to support a blowtorch from the west pushing over us into scandi which will melt a lot back.

Still early daysm

I had -9c max. Didn't actually feel cold.

Light winds, with little or no wind it won't feel as cold as the thermometer says. That is until you get below -30c then it starts to feel cold when your lungs hurt when breathing. Regardless of wind.

I remember being out at 1am in a short sleeved shirt thingy in -15 or so and coz there was now wind it wasn't half bad.  I've felt colder in driving wind and rain even though it's been 5-10 lol. Posted Image

Ok, so snow going west, plus a bit of melting in central russia. (To be expected, it is still October, so no fretting now.)

.

Gaz1985 ....I totally agree with you,

And dangerous with unsuitable clothing you won't last long below -30, The lowest ive been is -37 in finland and until you've experienced it is hard to explain what its like,

But i do remember breathing hurts especially when sniffing fast the pain up your nose makes your eyes water inwhich trust me you don't want that to happen!

(eyelids stuck together) Posted Image ..... I also remember when taking my gloves off for one minute thats all and the sensation was the same as if you put your hand over

a gas stove the feeling is the same ...... heat or cold it burns.

But regarding all that if you love the cold it will be one of the greatest experiences you'll have.....Try it one day Posted Image

Re: being in the cold, I did my doctoral research in the Russian Arctic, Moscow and St Petersburg. The employees in the Arctic who were all expats had to go out in pairs if they were 'socialising' in the evening, to avoid the risk of being drunk and passing out in the snow; it was around minus 15-20 but well wrapped up I never felt especially cold. However in Moscow with a windchill of minus 25, I arrived at a US company to do an interview and my face had frozen so much I couldn't speak to introduce myself as it was completely numb; I think they thought I was drunk!

Good to see Longyearbyen and Spitzbergen snowing over nicely now:)

You have never being in cold until you feel things in your nose when you breath . What a wierd feeling that is

Go to Altnaharra on a record breaking night, then it will certainly feel cold!

Still looking very reasonable. Great western extent of the snow.

Spent some time in the blast freezing room at a pea processing plant when I was a student. Can't remember the exact temp but it was circa -40c or below. You don't realise that cold can be actively painful in a matter of seconds.

2002 looks mightily impressive so early on. We aren't a million miles away from that scenario though

come on 2013! Posted Imagecursnow_asiaeurope (7).gifPosted Image [url=http://forum.netweather.tv/index.php?app=core&module=attach&section=attach&attach_rel_module=post&attach_id=188866]ims2002290_asiaeurope (1).gif[/url

But unfortunately winter during 2002 wasn't that great for us in the UK, so in this case lots of early snow cover didn't make much difference for our winter. Why would it be different this year?

well as john said, 2002 wasn't particularly memorable. my point was, we are ahead (at this stage) of two of the best winters we've had in recent years!

Its just the excitement seeing all that snow spreading west and of the potential for interesting weather later in the winter, every year is different so who knows.

Its great that we are doing well , just imagine if it was very late developing and the ice terrible , I would not want to look at the charts till winter. Snow is like money its always good to have a bit more.

A sea ice extent increase of 170,836km2 on IJIS for the 17th, which is a record large extent increase for that date based on the 2002 to 2012 data.

More of that and we might be justified in calling this a great refreeze!

Daily sea ice extent change for October
