I like hows the losses shown above do not give Russia any negative snow anomaly for the time being as it is so early in the season, not that any negativity would mean a lot for the UK  before October.  http://climate.rutgers.edu/snowcover/chart_daily.php?ui_year=2013&ui_day=242&ui_set=2

Had to do a double take on todays chart compared with yesterdays, but there is def some ice expansion on todays image. Not sure if its an overall gain, but very interesting.

Anyone else notice the top of the Svalbard hills have a sprinkle of snow cover now?

Posted Image

And the EC 0z solution gives -5c 850s into central-western Russia; quite notable for mid-September, unlikely to verify at d10 but still an interesting possibility.

But its still very early season for snow watching even the ice has not finished downward tread http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/charctic-interactive-sea-ice-graph/

that is really an impressive dumping of snow in Tibet isn't it? Usually it comes after the first major snows over Russia. This can only add to the early cooling of the northern hemisphere :-)

The first projected snowfall for lowland Svalbard tomorrow, with a veil of cloud bearing rain and snow moving from the SW during the day, by the late afternoon, Longyearbyen should be seeing its first snow of the long winter ahead. Could be quite a snowy evening up there for them- you can track it here:
