I really hope i get to see some of the comet debris. It sounds like a great light show.

Keep an eye on here to see the cloud clearing today (fingers crossed):

The annual firework display in the sky known as the Perseids meteor shower – one of the most spectacular examples of “shooting stars†– could reach a peak this evening and Tuesday morning, astronomers said.

Each year between 17 July and 24 August, the meteor shower is active as the Earth’s orbit around the Sun passes through the cosmic material trailing from the tail of comet Swift-Tuttle, which last passed through our vicinity in 1992. On Monday evening and Tuesday morning there is the possibility of seeing bright streaks of light flash through the sky at a rate of about one or two a minute, according to the Royal Astronomical Society. “This year the prospects for the shower are relatively good, as the Moon is a waxing crescent and will have set from most of the UK by 11pm, meaning that its light will not interfere significantly with the view,†it said.

Meteors, also known as shooting stars, are small particles of material that collide with the Earth’s upper atmosphere at speeds of 36 miles per second, vaporising into flashes of light in the process. Debris from the tail of Swift-Tuttle hits the atmosphere on the Earth’s annual migration around the Sun and appear to originate from a “radiant†in the constellation of Perseus, hence the name for the meteor shower. “Unlike many celestial events, meteor showers are straightforward to watch and, for most people, the best equipment to use is simply your own eyes,†the society said. “Advice from meteor observers is to wrap up well and set up a reclining chair to allow you to look up at the sky in comfort. If possible it also helps to be in a dark site away from artificial light,†it said.

Professor Alan Fitzsimmons of Queen’s University Belfast said: “Comet Swift-Tuttle won’t be visiting our neck of the woods again until 2125, but every year we get this beautiful reminder as the Earth ploughs through the debris it leaves in its orbit.â€

If it is clear tonight, I just may pitch out in the garden with a chair and a hot cuppa to watch the "fireworks"

May be just a touch of cloud around London, otherwise looking clear later:

Hopefully the clouds we have here now will have cleared off by tonight, I will certainly be out there trying to see something Posted Image

You have a good Monday too Lee - I'm struggling a bit here as it's normally my day off but I'm working ..the flip side is after today I've got 10 days off Posted Image

Well, the forecast reckons we should see "long clear periods" across our region tonight. Let's hope this is one of the MetO's most accurate forecasts of the month!

Enjoy your 10 days off. (Though I'm sure you don't need to be told to do that! I certainly never do!)

I am on holiday too this week (WOO HOO), not going anywhere, just not working, been trying to get the spare PC to play ball as a digital picture viewer for my "art studio" in the spare room, think I may need to show it the fresh install disc...

on topic it is warm and breezy here, just about to nip out to the local shop for some supplies (mainly tea bags TBH)

Still lots of cloud here, this needs to shift by late afternoon ideally, but there does seem to be a lot coming through with the jet:

Nocturnal cooling will dissolve any cloud cover, not a problemo!!

Same here, been out to the shop and back and now it is cloudier and duller than a boy band concert.

V Festival 2013 weather forecast: Showers expected

V Festival goers can expect cloudy overcast conditions and rain this weekend, according to early weather reports.

Music fans heading to Hylands Park in Chelmsford to see headliners Beyoncé and Kings of Leon can expect a mix of sunshine and showers. The Saturday is forecast to be dry but cloudy at the Essex site, with temperatures reaching a peak of 28 degrees Celsius, reports BBC Weather.

However, that dry weather is currently expected to end on Sunday, with small breaks of sunshine interrupted by dark clouds and rain. Over at Weston Park in Staffordshire, it is expected to be a mix of rain and sunshine on the Saturday with peak temperatures of 21 degrees Celsius. The Sunday is currently forecast for more of the same, with temperatures slightly dipping to 20 degrees Celsius.

The Script, Stereophonics, Jessie J, Ellie Goulding and Emeli Sandé will also perform at this year's Virgin Media V Festival, which takes place on August 17-18.

It's getting a bit brighter here again now but boy did it go dull earlier, my rain alarm went off but as far as I can tell it didn't actually rain here but there must have been a shower nearby.

With the perseid meteor shower peaking tonight and clear skies forecast for many, give yourself the best chance of seeing a meteor with these guides

I guess all we can do is check the radar for a gap and get out there and look up Posted Image

Evening all. A very unseasonal look and feel to the weather here this evening with thick cloud, a stiff breeze and just 20c. I think the chances of meteor watching here tonight are again about zero.

Trust you all had a good weekend. Posted Image
