Rugby League / Union 2013 onwards

Surprisingly Warrington thrashed Huddersfield 44-24 in the cup. They were by far the better side and the front row were outstanding.

Great win by the Bulls 19-12 against Hull. Built on a terrific defensive display. What a difference 12 months makes.

Brilliant game between the Saints and Wigan tonight that the former deservedly won 22-16. A game full of incidents and one or two brilliant moments including a very unlikely drop goal by Richards.. It also highlighted why forward passes cannot be referred to the video ref in the league.

Rather embarrassing semi in the cup today with Wigan beating the Broncos 70-0. I'm afraid the difference in class was all too obvious. Should be a lot closer in the other semi tomorrow with Warrington being slight favourites.

Absolutely cracking game in the other semi which Hull shaded, deservedly, 16-12. Brilliant.

Yes, a fine, hard fought game, tense to the last second.

Really enjoyed that.

Come on you Early Birds in the final  !

At half time they were talking about the forthcoming world cup and the 2008 final which produced the biggest upset in the cup history when New Zealand defeated Australia. They showed the video incident regarding whether a penalty try should have been awarded that is still causing controversy today. Guess who the video ref. was? Steve Ganson.

Great game between Wigan and Hull K. R. tonight that Wigan shaded perhaps a shade luckily. Once again a couple of video decisions were worthy of the Oxford Union.

Great game tonight between the first and second in the league Wigan and Huddersfield. A very good performance by the Giants in the second half and they deservedly won 30-12. They should win the league shield now. One of their tries was a forward pass but that cannot be referred. The banned shoulder charge is becoming a bit of an issue.

Astonishing game tonight when Widnes, who had conceded 110points in their previous two games, beat the Wolves at Warrington to stop them going top. Not only that they did it with only 12 men for the whole of the second half. Unbelievable and fully deserved

Another remarkable game tonight. Hull K. R. went to Leeds and won 16-12. A great defensive display and a try by Lovegrove that not many could have scored.

A pretty poor Challenge Cup final in very bad conditions. Wigan deservedly won 16-0 but Hull made far too many unforced errors.

Yes, Hull FC were very poor on the day I think .. such a lot of mishandlings and mistakes.

Having said that the defence must have done pretty well to keep the score to 16.

That's 8 straight final losses for Hull FC at Wembley.

* Good job we support Hull KR really, ;)

Good game between Saints and Wolves tonight. The latter shot into a 22-0 lead and looked like they were going to win easily The Saints were better in the second half but eventually lost 29-16. If Huddersfield beat Wakefield on Sunday they will win the league.

The giants were far too good for Wakefield winning 40-0 and the league. I wouldn't bet against them winning the Grand Final.

I bet Brian Moore will wax lyrical over this.

Law change makes scrum more engaging

Jeffrey confident latest modifications will increase spectacle

John Jeffrey, the former Scotland flanker and leading International Rugby Board official, has described the new scrum engagement process as “a seminal moment†in the history of the sport and rejected claims, chiefly emanating from Leicester, that the changes are dangerous.

The new “crouch, bind, set†sequence, coupled with a renewed determination from referees to enforce a straight feed into the scrum, will be used for the first time competitively in Britain when the Aviva Premiership and RaboDirect PRO12 seasons begin tomorrow night.

Richard Cockerill accused the IRB of “exchanging one mess for anotherâ€. The Leicester director of rugby is an advocate of crooked feeds and questioned how it can be safe, given the power and forces involved in a modern scrum, for a hooker to be striking for the ball with one foot off the ground in the face of an eight-man shove.

Jeffrey expects the law trials will lead to fewer collapsed scrums and therefore markedly improve the game as a spectacle, but he stressed to detractors such as Cockerill that the driving force behind the changes was player safety and long-term player welfare.

I caught part of the Cliff Morgan interview tonight. Both interesting and funny. He discussed Jackie Kyle and thought him the greatest fly half he had seen. He most certainly was a great player but also a legend off the pitch when he retired. For those too young to remember him.

Wigan deservedly beat the Giants this evening in the first of the play offs. The latter get another bite at the cherry next week.

Another play off game in appalling conditions in which Hull beat Catalan by virture of a great defense. This won't be enough against better sides.

Great game between Warrington and Leeds. Warrington were outstanding although they did have a bit of luck. Briers could, and should have been sent off, and Westwood's second try wasn't.
