Currently snowing non stop in the Austrian Alps with substantial falls likely to continue for the rest of the week with a further fall in temperatures.

Arghhh!! torture.....Very envious Carinthian!

Kiwi family have really missed their annual Austrian ski trip - Hotel was brilliant and refunded our money very promptly and we're looking forward to rebooking for next year.

Hope you manage to get out on the slopes to enjoy the plentiful powder.

Yes, missed my UK friends and my family out in Sweden and Vancouver. This March has produced some wonderful snow . Only a few locals on the mountains to enjoy the conditions with limited lifts in operation. Like the UK no pubs are open , so seems very strange. Where were you due to go ? The hoteliers around here report record deposits for next season. So many folk back home going for it next season and who can blame them.

Still it snows. This picture taken outside my favourite ski fodder spot, The Alderhorst ( sadly  closed )

Lovely warm and sunny today in most of Austria. Temps of 25c reported in the Southern state of Carinthia. Ski lifts still in operation over the weekend and looks like being busy with locals before the resort closes down on Monday. Irony being 40cm of fresh snowfall  forecast  forMonday going into Tuesday as the Arctic front approaches.  The end of a very weird season. Lets hope next season will be free to travel and the snow conditions as good as this one gone !

Coldest April Day in these parts for a long time. Max reached -5.3 c with snow showers and blowing snow, sunny intervals. Mountain tops are storm bound with temp around -11c at 2000m

At long last some Spring warmth arrives. Strong sunshine over the weekend starting to melt away the long lasting snow cover in the village ( which has lasted almost 6 month ) Current temp this morning is 17c .

Just about managed 21 c on Monday. Now gone downhill with lashings of cold rain. Current temp 6c. A soggy mess of melting snow. Some of the prepared piste runs into the village remain well intact (about 45cm depth of compressed snow ) but green patches becoming more dominate . Snow is currently falling at 2000m level and above.  A lot of precipitation in the forecast for the rest of the week.

Waking up yet again to more snow. A full cover of wet heavy snow and temp of 0.8c in the village. This late cold spell is becoming increasingly difficult in these parts. Cattle still locked up with no sign of any pasture growth , thats if you can see it ! Still lots of deep snow covered mountainside higher up.

Stayed in Filzmoos a few years ago and loved it. I know what you mean about the cattle being locked up as their winter shelter was just around the corner from our hotel. The knock-on effects of keeping them fed, sheltered and healthy now while waiting for the pastures for them to finally clear must be nightmarish.

Yes, I remember you taking your family there a couple of years back or so.. Nice easy resort ski-ing wise and very attractive, especially in the summer with all the hanging baskets. Its about 30 mins or so drive away so can get there for a days ski-ing. I like the Apre at The Hotel Happy Filzmoos right next to the village lift station. I have never seen so much snow last as long in the upper valleys in these parts. My farmer friend has some Highland breed cattle that can roam about in the mud and snow but rely on last summers hay for feed. Its not a good position at the moment. A hotelier out in Kleinarl breeds Black Angus on his farm and no chance of pasture feeding just yet as the temp at 1000m has struggled to get much above 8c  for the past few weeks apart from one day last week when 21c was the dizzy height of warmth but did not last long.

Slow improvements here with grass growth but still feeding a bit of silage  to cattle to supplement the very wet grass.Spring barley crops are two weeks behind normal growth. Walked them with my agronomist yesterday and he  was saying there will be no record breaking crops like last year.Reading that all the excess grain was exported last autumn from the UK so with poor weather across the country restricting yields this year then prices are going to go up.

The coldest May for a long time comes to an end. Indeed hot sunshine as this week progresses should melt a fair bit of the snow away. The first picture taken this morning is the top restaurant station at around 200Om and the other on approach to the village at 1430m absl.  The summer season and chair lifts open on 19th June . Glad to feel a bit of warmth !

@Northernlights At long last some much need warmth. Good to see the cattle out grazing in the Pollatal Valley , just over the border from Salzburgerland in Carinthia State. Note the snow line still fairly low down this morning but warmth and growth now in the valley.

After a slow start, summer eventually arrives in the mountains. Pictures taken in the village and on the local mountain yesterday. The summer lifts open for business on Saturday.

@Northernlights Cattle out to day at long last , free to roam and graze on the lower slopes. Always a nice sight and the pub opens this weekend for summer season !
