Morning all, just have update regarding our forecast snow event this coming weekend. The early results from the fine mesh model still indicate 15 cm of fresh snowfall in the village by 20.00 hours on Sunday evening with the heavier snow a few hours than previously envisaged. The snow level is forecast to be 1080m in the lower valley by 0800hours  on Monday morning. Will get a more accurate prediction tomorrow morning. Hopefully, some nice snowy pictures on Sunday.

C

Just an update from the above post. Well the well predicted snowfall duly arrived on time yesterday. Currently we have 30cm fresh snow cover at top base station around 2200m height and temp of -4c, In the village at just over at 1400m absl 8 cm in depth and current temp just below freezing. The upper low over Northern Italy produced quite an extensive early season snowfall in the Eastern Alps. The cloud and snow should soon start to break up as a NW ly flow of Pm source engages the area. Temperature are expected to remain on the low side for much of the rest of this week with further mostly light snowfalls above 1400m level.

Nice pictures from another local mountain on the Katschberg. Great fodder stop is the Gamskogel hutte, especially for its famous Apple Strudel with lashings of thick cream !

Good to see the early season snow but mixed with disappointment, as it’s looking like most of us will miss our trip to the alps again this year with the ongoing pandemic. I’ll just have to make do with your pictures and hope we actually get some meaningful snow here, it’s well overdue!

Yes, its a big worry. I know some of the local hoteliers have had no bookings at all from the UK. Hopefully, things will get better and travel restrictions lifted. UK must be overdue for a snowy winter !

Morning all. Another snowy October morning dawns, temp -1,8c and a fresh covering overnight. 7th October morning with full snow cover in the village. Shame its going to all disappear next week way up the mountain with a spell of unusual warmth forecast with 16c at 1500m. Crazy weather.

Wow, 16° at 1500m tis a bit warm that.  Grim, grey but mild at 10° with a very fine drizzle here at the mo.  Loving your pictures thank you.

Yes the snow disappearaed from the village with the arrival of warmer temps. Currently, snowing again down to village level with quite a thick covering of wet snow. Despite the warmer temps , I was surprised how much snow retention there was at 2000m and above. I suppose now the sun is at a lower angle , not as much melt on Northern Slopes and quite a bit of reflection under the clear skies of Euro high as the warmer upper flow is defected further east and north of the Alps. I think.

Some more pictures of todays snowfall. 9 days  so far this October with full snow cover in the village at just over 1400m asl. Something is stirring in our turbulent atmosphere to make this happen ! Not seen this before, well since 2005 at least.

Its been a unsettling day in Austria. The murderous evil killings in Vienna earlier. Lock down of bars and restaurant also in force due to increase in Corvid 19 outbreaks. Horrid warm airmass today , melting the snow.Think many will be glad to see the back of 2020.

Beautiful mild and sunny November morning in the Lungau. Note the fog in the valley, 2c down there and 9c on the mountain.

Terrible news of Vienna earlier in the week, we are certainly living in extremely challenging times globally.

Beautiful day here, clear blue skies and lots of sunshine, lockdowns seem to coincide when high pressure dominates, lovely settled weather without the freedom to make the absolute most of it.  Things got a little exciting this week - we had a bit of early morning frost.  Keep positive, stay safe.

Thanks. I do hope your weather stays settled for a week or two. I know how nice the countryside in East Cheshire is when the sun shines ! Not a lot we can do over here, everything is closed down including the local pub but glorious hiking weather at the moment. Hardly see a soul but navigate my way up the mountain to sit on a snow patch. Sad person that I am !

Certainly a big difference to a few weeks ago! Do you know how the glaciers have faired this summer? Has it been a particularly mild one again at altitude?

edit: prob the wrong thread for this

Measurements are monitored cm by cm on many of the Austrian Glaciers by various interested parties including the Alpine Club. Summer retreat results will soon to be available.    There has been  a concerted  man made protection of some of the glaciers over the last few summers but I would expect the trend of the past 3 decades of more to continue with the same rate of loss.  Since being here for now 15 years , you can actually visible  see less of the glaciers on the nearby Gross Glockner range and the Ankogelgruppe. Its a big worry. Sure is a result of man made GW in my view.

The man made efforts I have read about, covering the ice in an insulated and reflective material is very desperate, but exactly what these times call for.
