Wonder article on the Austrian weather website about the forthcoming opening of the Grossglockner 'High Alpine Road' on the 1st May 2015. This will be the 80th anniversary of the road opening and hundreds of thousands of visitors are expected this summer. To get ready for the opening, an amazing 600,000 cubic metres of snow has been cleared from the road in the last two weeks.

At 3,793m and with views reaching up to 150 miles on a clear day, this is a wonderful place to visit. There's a restaurant up there to enjoy lunch. So if you've not been there before, add it to your bucket list!

The article (translated using Google) has some great insight into the history of the road:

Rotary plow in use
When removing snow on the 60 year old Wallack-Rotationspflüge also came this year for use. This 375 bhp plows hurl the "white stuff" in huge fountains up to 25 meters high and 50 meters wide. In the first years after the road opening (1935) handmade still was needed: Around 350 men were employed in the sometimes seemingly hopeless battle against house high snow walls. The snow removal lasted up to 70 days. Franz Wallack, builder of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, recognized early the chances of mechanization. He constructed the "rotary plow - Wallack system", a combination of snowblower and plow, in 1953 the severe test was the first time.

Also the need for a cleared road has changed over time. Earlier in Carinthia was 48 kilometer road with its 36 bends between Fusch in Salzburg and Heiligenblut an important north-south link in Austria, today the crossing is more of an experience or sporting event.

With around 900,000 visitors each year, the High Alpine Road is one of the most visited facilities of the province of Salzburg. The company majority-owned by the Confederation sets in seven to eight million euros and has an annual average just over 50 employees work in the high season there are about one hundredth.

Hi Malcom, its a truly amazing road. Great in summer, scary in winter. Will be going up there later in May to visit the Pasterze Glacier for Alpine Club measurements. The High Alpine Road can only be accessed from the Pongau ( North ) from Salzburg side via Taxenbach and the Valley of the Golden Eagle. Its just a wonderful run. The funicular takes you up to the base of the glacier.

In the summer the road is popular with bikers from all over Europe, many from the UK. Even vintage car rallies make the ascent. The sight of a Silver Cloud Rolls Royce heading for the sky is just an amazing experience.

Spring has arrived. Picture of my favourite walking location, pastures of the Gontal Valley with Alpine plants now starting to appear. The mountain in the  background is the Kareick ( berg 2400m plus ) still retaining some snow  on the north side. A popular mountain to climb in the summer with a long gentle ridge approach to the summit. Now waiting for the thunderstorm season to get going, can be an awesome show in these parts especially late evenings when the lightning show in the mountains is special.

Morning, snowfall returns to the Tirol and Voralbourg mountains this morning. Heavy falls reported above about 1400m. Still in the warm sector in Carinthia but some snow expected at higher elevations tomorrow.

And a very Good Morning to you Paul. That picture looks more like mid-winter than late May! I've just posted in the France Thread that they're closing mountain passes due to the heavy snow expected. And from the following article on the Austrian weather website, the same thing is happening in the Austrian Alps too.

Even on Tuesday we were sweating at up to 29 degrees. But not anymore.

Cold, rain, wind and even snow. After the Super Summer weather of recent days deep (low) Erik brings now the bad weather back to Austria. The Facts:

Heavy snowfall made roads impassable
Completely surprisingly, it was yesterday white again in the west of the country. On the Stubai Glacier 15 centimeters of new snow were measured, the Brenner Pass had to be summarily banned due to snow road. A total of up to 70 centimeters of snow falling today in the mountains.
Already in the early hours of Wednesday the Adriatic deep had picked up speed and cared for hundreds of severe weather. Overall, the lightning detection services Aldis counted 724 flashes, of which 200 in Lower Austria and again twice as many in Styria.

Styria: EUR 2.5 million damage by hail
Here was added another weather phenomenon: The hail. Egg Large hailstones destroyed 2,000 hectares of agricultural land. Affected among other strawberries, apples, pears, corn and pumpkin. Overall losses: 2.5 million euros.

Guten Morgan,

Waking up to this . Nearly Mid-summer snow. Snow level down to 1000m in places. Picture of the piste in Katschberg and the other showing summer work brought to a halt in the nearby resort of Obertauren.

3 days of full snow cover in the village. Lots of snow accumulating at elevation (1800m) and above in much of Austria this morning. When the melt comes, it will be rapid with associated flooding possible. However, the snow retention in the resort is quite unusual for this last week of May. Looks like the upper flow will keep much of the Eastern Alps on the colder side for the rest of the month, prolonging the snow line below 2000m for a while longer yet.

Not totally unusual to get summer time snow up there. Was last up there on the Pasterze Glacier last month to try and measure the total length of the glacier but too much snow mass at the time. Still waiting for the latest result. A slower retreat would be the best we can hope for.

Yep, snow in Heiligenblut in Hohe Tauren National Park. Temp 2c. May be the last of the summer snow for a while as a big warm up expected by the end of this month and into July. Will be there in 4 weeks.

Well two weeks since leaving Blighty and wish I was back. The heat is relentless following on from the hottest July on record in some parts. The striking swath of heat from Spain, across most of France into South Germany and Central Europe. The Swiss/Austrian Alps taking a direct hit. August continues with heat building today in parts, temps up to 33c, even 30c at 1000m absl. Lack of wind makes the heat more oppressive. Maybe some cooler weather on the way with thunderstorms. Bier sales must be good, I am currently helping out with...

 Cheers,

 C

Hi carinthian. You may need to get to the ATM and withdraw some more beer money! The weather website wetter.at today has the headline "The heat rolls on" and reckons the peak will be this coming weekend, reaching 38C in the east of Austria. And if tonight's ECM is to be believed, there's only a brief respite early next week before the heat builds back in once again.

For those who can be bothered to translate it, the full article by wetter.at is interesting to say the least, including on page 2 recipes for drinks and dishes best for the heat and warnings that "heat can adversely affect your sex life"!!

It is good to read this, it puts our weather in perspective, I don't think I will be complaining about any of our delicious mild boundary-layer weather any more, the idea of continental oppressive heat sounds awful! Enjoy the beer though :-)

Woollymummy, I hide in the shade during the peak heat and venture out in the early evening, usually down to the pub and sit outside drinking cold bier. This is the best time of the day during the hot spell, calm warm evenings and watching the distant skies for any sign of thunderstorms. Perfect !

The weather in Austria is a predominantly alpine pattern, with influences from the Mediterranean climate to the south and the Pannonian climate to the east. To stay updated with accurate weather forecasts, have a go at Weather Mate.

Great if you have an iphone/pad.

Bet it also works best in the USA, like many weather gadgets.
