Misty & murky start here today, but the radar loop on meteox shows the cloud quite readily burning away on all sides.. Hoping for a sunnier day than the hour we got yesterday at around 6-30pm.

SKYWARN UK SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH #019
ISSUED: 1430UTC TUESDAY 11TH JUNE 2013

SKYWARN UK FORECASTS THE POTENTIAL FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM CONDITIONS AS FOLLOWS:
STRONG, POTENTIALLY DAMAGING GUSTS - ENGLAND, WALES, NORTHERN IRELAND, SOUTHERN SCOTLAND
LARGE, POTENTIALLY DAMAGING HAIL - ENGLAND, WALES
TORNADOES - EASTERN, SOUTHERN AND NORTHERN ENGLAND

IN EFFECT FROM 0600UTC UNTIL 2100UTC WEDNESDAY 12TH JUNE 2013

A ROBUST WARM AIRMASS WILL BE ENCOURAGED NORTHWARD FROM THE BISCAY AREA IN CONJUNCTION WITH A SHARPLY OVERSPREADING UPPER JETSTREAM AND STRONG WINDS AT ALL LEVELS. DESTABILISATION ALONG THE WARM FRONT, TRIPLE POINT AND SOUTH OF THE JET NOSE IS EXPECTED TO YIELD STRONG CONVECTION IN A HIGHLY SATURATED PROFILE.

DISCUSSION: EARLY IN THE PERIOD, HEAVY SHOWERS AND POSSIBLE THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE ADVECTED INTO THE SOUTHWEST AND SOUTH OF ENGLAND, AS A WARMER THAN AVERAGE AIRMASS SURGES NORTHEAST. THE UPPER JET OVERSPREADS THIS PROVIDING AMPLE FORCING FOR STRONG CONVECTION DESPITE ONLY SLIGHT INSTABILITY. LATER IN THE PERIOD, THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP ALONG THE OCCLUDED FRONT OVER NORTHERN IRELAND, WALES AND SOUTHERN SCOTLAND, WITH FURTHER INITIATION FROM THE RESURGENT JETSTREAM AND STRONGER WARM AIR ADVECTION INTO WALES AND ENGLAND. THOUGH CONVECTION SHOULD BEGIN ELEVATED, DAYTIME HEATING AND A LONGER OVERLAND FETCH SHOULD ALLOW FOR SOME SURFACE-BASED INSTABILITY AND GREATER POTENTIAL FOR DEEPER CONVECTION FURTHER EAST ACROSS ALL PARTS OF ENGLAND AND PERHAPS SCOTLAND. THE SOUTHERN HALF OF THE UK WILL BE AT GREATER RISK OF STRONGER CONVECTION, WITH INTENSE RAINFALL AND POTENTIALLY LARGE HAIL. ALL AREAS HAVE SUFFICIENT LOW LEVEL HELICITY AND SHEAR FOR ENHANCED CHANCES OF TORNADOES, THOUGH AGAIN THIS RISK IS GREATER FURTHER EAST AND SOUTH. THIS WATCH MAY BE UPGRADED. PLEASE MONITOR WEATHER AND TRAVEL INFO AS NECESSARY.

SPOTTER ACTIVATION IS REQUESTED AND SPOTTERS ARE REQUESTED TO REPORT ALL FACTORS EXCEEDING ACTIVATION CRITERIA.

  • 2 weeks later...

Perfect day in the calder valley today. Vest tops and shorts but not too steamy.

Long may it continue but could we have a couple of overnight electric storms please???

Could see the first 30c across our region either tomorrow or Saturday, certainly the very high 20's. Into next week and the heat remains, 25-27c quite widely going by the latest model runs

Hoping this warm spell lasts all summer or just into August for Party in the pines (doubt it though)

Spent an amazing week seeing the Lake District last week.

Shane these summers seem to be getting less and less.

Thought had 30c and above temps, and might have done at one point today but looks like the temp sensor is going kaput. Its in the shade yet is recording now 34c, and keeps increasing, yet 2 old analog sensors are saying temp is about 27c. Seems we have our first casualty due to the hot weather Posted Image

Funny the temps it was saying were matching up to the normal bulb thermometer near the house until at least 2pm.

Agreed. Its felt very un thundery. not the usual build up to thunder storms, the models keep showing the cape/li on the other side of the Pennines, that worrys me that this low cloud will be stubborn an stop any storm development.

Certainly doesn't look very exciting today. Very foggy this morning on the M1 and woodhead with the dew etc. Temperatures currently 18.6. Tuesday Day/Night looking more likely for some shows now and not today. This cloud is looking to clear for late evening. Don't think we will see anything today!

Extremely grim here. Utter rubbish from the forecasters. Leeds will not reach 21 never mind 26/27. They have completely messed up this forecast. Shameful. 16c here and damp. This cloud off the sea has tended to spoil things quite a bit during what was a great spell of weather.
