Severe Cold And Heavy Snow - Winter 81/82

Thought some of you might want to see my new historic video looking at the severe cold and heavy snow of the winter of 81/82.

i remember it well heavy snow ,huge drifts and severe temps.colder in these parts than dec 2010. dec 81..average -1deg,dec 2010 average -0.7

I never felt so certain of a blizzard than when I fell asleep. I had left my dorma windows open facing east and woke to a room full of whirling snow ! I had spent the previous 3 years in Derby so was familiar with a good winter or two but this day still stands head and shoulders above the rest . Outside the snow was horizontal and so hard it really hurt. Hand milked the shorthorn cow and helped with feeding all the stock . housed ..all but 30 fattening lambs.  Drifts are growing everywhere they can..our lane is blocked early on 350 yards, hedge to hedge

 I headed into the blizzard to find the lambs.9months old and off a mountain but still this was my job. They had the run of half the farm .So welding goggles and hands in pockets I went off for an hour or two that felt like being Scott on the Anyartic ,When I thought I had found them I was suprised at their inability to move so I approached the nearest one to find a clump of rushes re-sculpted in snow and wind . Aaghhh As were all it's friends  !!!

 At some stage of the day the temp 'rose' to -3'C having started at -7 The wind was a very steady force 8 and the snow both falling and blowing lasted all day .I found the lambs behind a hedge about 100 yards from where I started after about 3 hours and they spent the next few days in the hayshed . There was snow everywhere it could penetrate and drifts to 8 feet all over the place 

 That night it cleared and I recorded my first -17'C followed by a max of -7 the following day. Two days with tractor and front end loader got us dug out and 10 days later the snow was all gone
