Max Hastings, Catastrophe: Europe goes to War in 1914.

    Very fine book.

The appalling day, July 1st 1916, is often wrongly cited as the First World War's high-blood-mark. Not so, the French suffered appalling losses in the the first weeks of the war. The 'Battle of The Frontiers', on the 22nd August, cost the French army 27, 000 killed. In the next two days this rose to 75,000.

To my mind the French part in the first few weeks of the conflict is often downplayed.

Watched The Selfish Giant a few days ago, quite enjoyed it (never realised until after it was an Oscar Wilde story), also started to watch R.I.P.D. which had a good cast, but that still did not save it from being a carp film IMHO, think M.I.B. but replace Aliens with ghosts and you get the idea.

This week I have Riddick to watch.

I`ve seen the spoof of that....scary movie 5,but havn`t braved to watch that yet,I`ve had it recorded for 2 months.

Psychological movies are far more disturbing than gory horror and I`ve gone off them in the last 2/3 years.

Finally watched Skyfall (James Bond) and rather enjoyed it, got a kick at the end plot wise too.

Also watched G.I. Joe (2nd one) last night, you do not need to bring your brain along for it, but if you like action it will fill your bag.

Half watched Jack Reacher (need to watch the rest as it goes back tomorrow) and brought Into Darkness as it is very good, really liking the ST reboot.

Well I watched the rest of Jack Reacher and whilst I am not a Tom Cruise fan, it was a rather good film in the end.

Also watched ST:Into Darkness again last night (nothing new to rent from the Library this week).

The last book I read was 'Ash' by Sir James Herbert - A different tact of writing from his previous works. What does the world do with its undesirables, global dictators and dirty little secrets...they hide them in a remote Scottish castle and, global governments pay majestic amounts to keep those secrets far from the public domain. It is supernatural, touching on the controversial..so much so, this book had little media coverage because of its subject matter.

Currently reading Global Crisis: War, Climate Change and Catastrophe in the seventeenth Century by the very fine historian Geoffrey Parker. Ho, Ho.

I'm staggered by the amount of research that has gone into this book.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098354/board/nest/18618488?ref_=tt_bd_1 Remember this its one of the best secret society type horror movies. Rented this back in 1989 it still looks better than most horror movies of today. It was aired on the beeb too.

    Very good slimey special effects.

    Pacific Rim and Looper...

PR I enjoyed and watched it three times in a week when I rented it, Looper, had to watch it twice as it seemed a bit odd the first time and it still did not really do it for me.

Last night I watched Captain Phillips, now that I did really enjoy, the portrail of the Somali pirates is done so well I felt genuine hostility towards them.
